I was wondering if those experienced in turbos or any that have had a similar problem could cast their eye over my current issue.

The car is an X reg (2001) Sharan S 1.9 TDi.

I've had an ongoing problem with my turbo, the symptoms were that I'd hear a hissing noise as the turbo was active, and around 2-2500 rpm the turbo would cut out and the car would go into limp home mode.

I had a similar problem about 18 months ago, and the problem was identified as the turbo to intercooler link. However, this seemed to be less of a problem, the cut out would happen at a higher rpm (2500-3000) and a lot less smoke. The current problem was a lot more noticeable.

I've been intending to look at this myself, but due to bad arthritis (I'm only 38!) I've not been able to get under the car so I bit the bullet today and booked it in to my local VAG specialist. Within half an hour they'd identified the problem and called me to advise.

What they've found is that a hose at the opposite end of the turbo has split, mainly down to a damaged bracket. To replace both the hose and bracket is about £160. There's a bit of oil in the area, as apparently it's fouled the transmission area. However, they do not feel that it's caused any further damage.

I'm worried in particular about any further problems that may be identified. In particular the turbo itself. The turbo appears to be spinning correctly, and as far as the car was concerned, no problems to report (until of course it noticed the boost pressure was low and cut out the turbo). Regarding noise, apart from the hissing, the turbo and general engine noise has sounded fine (apart from being a bit louder, but the minor oil leak in the transmission area had dropped my oil level near the low mark - it's normally just under full so I'm assuming that's why).

Bearing the above in mind, is it likely that the turbo itself is ok? I really don't want this car to end up costing me hundreds (wrong end of the month for payday), and more importantly it's got to do an 800 mile round trip this weekend so it ideally needs to be working.
