Hi all , this is my first post and i hope im not asking somethings thats been done time and time before....

anyhow, i have a golf 1.4 16v 2001 AXP engine, my problem is i have an engine management light lit , took it to VASS tech in aylesbury today, and showing an EGR fault.they tested the valve and its working electronicaly but they cant adjust the valve perameters and sugest it needs an EDC upgrade as its showing software 5.7 or something like that and they dont have the disc to do it so its main dealer for me . any help from those who know would be great. VW will be expensive i know it

thanks and hope you can help,Duncan

i find that amazing that in 10years thats the first egr valve problem the car has had,it may well be working electronically but the valve may well not be,the code i think will have been for a low flow or high flow and the parameters should not need adjusting, the chances are your valve is caput or the pipe from it is blocked.....check with the dealers to see what software you should have but i would say in 10 years its probably been updated.........

ive had the metal pipe off and cleaned it through, seems free ,air passes ok.hoses are not split ,had valve off too and the ports looks ok .not had the throttle body apart yet to see if its blocked or not though.at £165 for a new valve im not going to replace it until i know for sure.
its confusing , some posts say no need to replace valve ,some say have replaced and still the same.
anybody out there had the same problems.

    cheers vagman

if you know somebody with vcds (vag.com)they can scan it for you to find the software number (check vcds user location)somebody may be near you and scan for a beer token.......
165 seems a lot of money for an egr valve last time i got one it was round the 100 mark....

    German and Sweedish £141+vat = £165

Euro car parts £110 with vat

    VAG dealer awaiting price £?

VASS tech ran diagnostics on it this morning,as i said in first post it was showing software @ 5.7 something dont remember exactly but they have it recorded.

just checked my receipt from them and this is what they have put :

EGR not adapted tried to adapt but failed, possable software update required, readapted throttle body,EGR working when tested may have a mechanical fault.

they do not have the software to do this so am waiting for VW main dealer to get back to me
