    Hi Folks.
I noticed tonite while driving home, ( Nite time ), that the lights on my speedo/rev clock seem to be dimmer than usual. When you use the dimmer switch the lights seem to flicker and the light on the left, rev clock seems dimmer than on the right speedo. And both clock lights are dimmer than the light on the radio ?
    The car is a 2001 Nov 1.6S 16valve ( AZD).
    Anyone care to comment ????

    A few questions,

Do all the other electronics work properly?
Any other issues with the dash unit?
Car doesn't smell damp at all? Indicating water has got in?
Possible for you to get the car scanned, although i would imagine there would be no fault recorded?

It's one of those annoying faults, which at times can prove costly to repair. But there are far more 1.6 Cluster's around on eBay and such then some of the other Golf clusters such as 1.4 or SDI more specifically.

    Thanks for the reply Cammers.
No other issues with the dash unit, apart from what i believe to be an occasional flicker from all the lights in the consol behind the steering wheel, apart from that, everything seems to be fine.
No signs of any condensation or damp.
The most noticible problem is the flickering when you use the wheel switch to dim and brighten the display. Most people would probably drive on, though i tend to like to have everything perfect.
I have only one other electrical problem, though i think it is totally un-related where the drivers side front window, electricaly driven, tends to have a mind of its own ???

It seems to be a bit of an intermittent problem, which are notably the most difficult to cure. I would imagine the lighting for these dashs is some sort of LED device, i guess it could be possible for the bulbs to perhaps burn out or fade away, It's certainly not anything i have ever heard of.

I guess you could contact a firm which recondition cluster units, but it definitely appears to be an issue with the cluster itself. Other alternatives include, finding a used cluster and getting it re-programmed including the correct mileage and immobilizer coding. It's alot of hassle, but i do understand that you want things to be 'just so'

Would it be possible for you to get a video? And to see it flickering?

Or alternatively turn the brightness down, until you get a setting which it no longer flickers at i would give this a go before doing any major work, as i imagine replacing a cluster to be incredibly expensive, as you need to find someone with the appropriate gear.

I am getting a simular problem with my MkIV intermittant disco dash, also the stereo seems to get feedback at the same time. All other electrics seem fine. I have seen various posts going back to 2003 but I have not come acoss any surgested fix. The VW dealer has replaced the battery and alternatore to resolve this problem but its still there. Regards Richard....

If I find a fix I will let you know.
