    Hi firstly great forums,
I have done a search but nothing really fits the problem i have.

    I have a 1999 gti 1.8t the problem i have is:

if i turn right i get a MAJOR noise like a whooom whoom whoom whoom and i can feel it through the floor and steering wheel, if i turn left its there but not as bad.

I had it checked today and one of the steering control arms had ALOT of play that was replaced and both wheels feel tight. But the problem is still there.

Most of the bushes have been checked but we just cannot find the problem.

There is play in the near side drive shaft as in it moves in and out but the noise sound like its from the far side??

it almost feels like when it makes the whoom noise it slows the car as if its braking aliitle like a warped disk, but its not. Its really hard to explain

so to summarize when i turn right i get a whoom whoom whoom whoom noise and it almost and only almost feels like something is knocking / rubbing, when turning left its there but not so loud. Going staright its barely noticable.

Any help would be really appreciated before i blow a fortune.

ALso as a last note can a gearbox cause this? its goes into gear fine and does not make any odd sounds.

    Thanks

EDIT : JUST TAKING IT OUT ITS LIKE A KNOCKING NOISE BUT NOT A TINNY METALICAL ONE AS IF SOMEONE IS HITTING THE UNDERSIDE WITH A SOFT HAMMER IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE??

    Tony

These problems are a major pain and i clench my cheeks just reading your post and soaking up your pain remembering how bad it is to have a problem that one cannot pinpoint. Does the noise increase in frequency as the speed goes up?

Some times the only way is to start replacing stuff and rule the basics out. My wallet has had open heart surgery many times down to these 'marble in the ashtray' problems.

Maybe 'Crasher' can help you as he seems to be Obi Wan in these forums.

hi mate have you had the wheels off the ground and spun them? it sounds very much like a wheel bearing/diff bearing noise TBH, what size tyres have you got? reason i ask is it could be a tyre is out of shape, hope in some way this helps find the fault bud

    Hi thanks

Right so far i have had ,

    2 driveshafts
    2 cv joints
    1 steering arm
    nearside wheel bearing

and the noise is still there.

I have jacked it up the tyres seem good.

When i turn the wheel the end of the driveshaft where it mounts to the gear box makes a noise for about 2 inch of turning the wheel. sounds like its inside where the driveshaft is , but stops when you continue turning the wheel, its just when you goto start turning the wheel.

Goes into gear fine and pulls fine with no excessive gearbox noise.

I have noticed play int eh drivers side hub alittle up and down and some left to right looks like that steering arm has some play and is also slightly bent? i wonder if this could cause it?

sorry also it has 225/40/18 tyres

noise seems to go with rotation of the wheels and gets worse when turning, especially right but pass wheel bearing has been replaced? does it going left too.

I am really at my wits end now as per title lol

we have a customer who has the same fault as you, her son has changed both driveshalfs, both front bearings and it was still the same i put my old 16in vw rims on and the noise went, put the 18s back on and the noise came back, she has since had new tyres fitted which has made it better, if you can try a smaller set of wheels im sure you wont have a problem then mate
