I have an audi 80 1.9 td diesel, about 94 with an AZZ engine I believe.

This has been running really quite beautifully smooth, especially after I had used a fuel injection additive in the oil, name slips my memory but it was a three letter name beginning with s from halfords.

Anyhow, got in the car this morning, and fired up as usual, bit longer than normal but I put that down to glow plugs.

Gets a few yards up the road and it sort off clunk, jerked forward a bit, and the engine just cut out dead and now won't start at all. It was as if someone had thrown a spanner in there.

I can hear has if the starter motor is engaging (very slightly) a winding noise, which sounds electrical but the engine is just dead, nothing not a sound.

I've done some digging, and I have found anything from immobiliser problems to fuel pump, but not seen anything that fits exactly.

    Any ideas? Thanks

Check to see if there is power at fuel stop solenoid, or if a poor connection exists there.
Also have a look to see if timing belt is ok

I'm not a mechanic, but I will look in my manual about the solenoid.

I looked at the belts and they all seem to be fine.

Had AA out and it was a broken timing belt. Trouble is fella said because it was an AAZ engine, it's just more likley then not some internal damage was caused and it's a scrap job.

Seems a bit extreme just because a bit of a belt snapped.

    Google 'interference engine'

Basically when the timing belt snapped the valves will hit the pistons causing a shed load of damage.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
Nothing to see here, move along..

You can expect engine damage like bent valves etc but normally repairable
or try locating good used cylinder head.
