I currently have a 2000 MY 1.8T avant and with the amount of miles i do during the week it is costing about £120 a week to run on petrol. I average about 32mpg as 90% of my journey is motorway.

I was wondering whether it was worth changing to a diesel. what sort of mpg could i expect from the 1.9tdi or 2.5tdi ?

    thanks

I used to have to 130PS 1.9TDI in an A4, I could easily get 45+ MPG on a commute consiting of A-Roadsm, without trying. It could get up the the 60s with a bit of effort.

I once drove from Eastbourne to South Wales and back (434 miles), then drove to work and back (36 miles a day) for a week on one tank of Diesel!

You will easily get 49/50 mpg out of a 1.9TDi, I used to run an old Audi 80 TDi, consistently maintained around 49mpg regardless of use and I'm sure these engines have improved.

I now have an Allroad 2.5TDi, but to be honest the mpg is varied. I now commute down the motorway at (45miles) 60mph because of traffic and I'm seeing 42mpg.... but if you're doing motorway 80/90 and/or slow around town this drops to low 30s.

So my advice is 1.9TDi if you're after the economy (you will definately save money), but I do think the 2.5TDi is a better drive.

    Hi

My 2004 A6 SE 1.9TDi (130) is returning a combined of 48.9 mpg - Not much motorway driving, mostly country roads so I think that's just great.

I've heard that any bigger engines and the mpg begins to fall

    Thanks

If your doing that kind of mileage on a weekly basis, then it's best you change to a 1.9Tdi, on the motorway you'll easily achieve 50+mpg, so you'll be spending approx £70-£80 on fuel; which is a significant weekly saving. I also drive a 1.9Tdi VW passat estate which easily achieves 48mpg around town.

Due to the economic climate that we are now facing, alot of people are changing there cars for more frugal, cheaper to run cars. So your 1.8T will depreciate quicker than its current 1.9TDi equivalent, so its a win win situation.

I also have an A6 avant 2.7T tiptronic which only produces approx 22mpg (very poor),i will find it very hard to sell unless someone is specifically looking for one or its sold very cheap. That's why i pulled a hard bargain when i bought it.
