  1. 1.9TDI starting/battery issues

    Hi

We have a 1.9TDI (04plate - 104K). When the engine is started from cold, it starts first time, no problem. However, if the engine is warm, then it can takes several seconds for the engine to start.

Coupled with this, we've had 2 instances in the past 3 weeks of the battery going dead. The first time was when I plugged a fridge in, then started it 30mins later, and the battery was flat - ok, fair enough. But then I charged it overnight, all was fine for a week or so, and then at the weekend the battery was dead again (the engine only having been started an hour or so previous, with no problem, and nothing was 'on' to drain the battery).

    Any ideas...?

warm starting is a common problem with the mkv,if the cranking speed falls belom 250rpm and the coolant temp is above 70 degrees it takes longer to start, the remedy is usually to change the starter, which most people tend not to do for what is a minor inconvenience, they just live with it ,however your battery seems to be faulty get it checked at somewhere that will check for free and see how it goes.

Your battery, if the original, is now 6 years old and is probably at the end of its life. The cooler autumn mornings will soon sort it out and a new battery will be required.

The poor starting when warm is a separate issue if it continues after you've sorted out your battery problem. As nevo says, a new starter motor will then be required to cure it.

If you read your handbook, everyone should depress the clutch before operating the starter. That way the starter motor doesn't have to turn the gearbox as well as the engine.

I hope the solution is as simple as that, and that VAGMAN2 simply hasn't been using the correct procedure when starting his car.

    Any feedback VAGMAN2 ?
