I have a 2005 Passat with 2.0L 130hp engine and want to change the thermostat. I've had a look under the bonnet and assume it is located below the inlet manifold somewhere.

Can anyone give me advice to how easy this is to do and any tips on the best way to do it and are there any special tools required etc? Also, is the cooling system easy to bleed?

    Many thanks in advance.

You need to remove the air intake hose to gain access to the stat and pipe. I have the diagrams of what you need to remove and how to refill the system so PM me your email address and I'll send them to you However please confirm your engine code it could be a BLB. Regards Peter

Why do you need to change the stat is the engine not getting to 89/90 degrees. Regards Peter

    Hi Peter,

Many thanks for replying. I asked the question as I thought the Thermostat was stuck, the top hose was hot but the bottom hose luke warm. Coolant temp gauge would read 90 Deg though. Next day however it all took a turn for the worse when the engine started to overheat. Reading other posts on the forum meant it was more likely to be the water pump than the stat.

Took it to a family friend who runs his own garage who confirmed the impeller had come adrift. So new water pump fitted and as it was approaching a change ,a new cam belt and tensioner as well.

Car back on driveway, good as new.

Good that it is fixed. I though impellers had stopped falling off by 2005. Regards Peter
