    Hi

Just got a new model 2.0 tdi passat - and occasionally i hear a loud whining noise from the back wheels, not sure what it is but someone told me it could be a wheel bearing gone but then if it was a bearing then surely the noise would be there all the time.
    Anyone any ideas

    thanks

Are you sure it couldn't be the fuel pump making this noise. Has yours been changed yet?

I think you may find that the whirring noise coming from the back wheels is the electronic hand brake engaging.

If its the parking brake ya gotta be stationary. If y'are stationary it can't be a wheel bearing.

    Hi
The noise is heard while driving only
I did hear of the fuel pumps giving lots of trouble on these and im not sure whether its been changed.
Does the car not just stop completely when the pump goes?

Its a whining type noise, comes and goes but as stated before if its was a bearing the noise would be heard while driving all the time wouldnt it?

    Thanks

Perhaps it's the dreaded Passat rear tyre noise.

The inside of the rear tyres can wear unevenly, causing a noise like a wheel bearing going. Would be worth doing a search on here.

It could be the electronic handbrake if it happens when you stop, or, as I had when on the move with my car, the rear wheels needed adjusting. A four wheel alignment check seems to have sorted it out.

Check the link below, this is fairly common.

I have a 05 TDI passat which has a humming noise from the back. I was told by VW dealer mechanic it was tread noise from the michelin tyres. Not very satisfactory
