The wiper mech. can seize up.
There are posts on here that show how to remove and lube the mech.

The driver’s side spindle will be seized. I fit a new frame as it is more cost effective nut if you have the time you can strip the spindle out of the frame and clean it up. To get the motor/frame out you have to remove the wiper arms and the lower screen trim then remove the top of the ECU water box, disconnect the wiring from the main harness at the multiplugs and then unbolt the base of the water box and swing it and the ECU out of the way, then you can get the assembly out.

Happened to me with the drivers side spindle. Managed to free it out but a bit of a pain in the **** of a job. Best of luck.

After the recent dry period I noticed my wipers were really slow.
Read the info on here and went to remove the mechanism for repair but couldn't even get the wiper arms off! So I just liberally squirted WD40 on the linkages best I could and left until the next day hoping for the best.
When I tried the wipers the next day they were the same, really slow. The motor stopped completely a couple of times, I planned to sort it next weekend.
Today, as I needed the car, I lifted the wipers off the screen and turned them on and let them run. After a few minutes the speed increased slightly and soon the wipers were back to normal speed. I have used the car today in the rain and the wipers were fine (for today anyway)

My wipers started squeaking a year and a half ago, so I took the wipers off (using pullers) and all the associated trim, but I was too scared to unplug the ECU so gave it a clean & lube as best I could in situ. All fine until this week. Now they're going slow - lots of duck oil (all I have),and they're 80% ok for now.

Have found this guide here and intend to do it this weekend.

The guide is good. I've done it on two cars now. However only a temporary fix - as mine have gone go slow again approx a year after full stripdown and lube (first time with high temp grease and second time with copaslip).
Job is a bit of a pain in the.... but worth it as you can be sure they will stop working altogether on the wettest day and furthest from home.

Might be worth sticking some rainex or similar on the screen and in the boot) to help in the meantime just in case the worst happens.

PS I ended up with no wipers 80 odd miles away from home - went into a corner shop and bought a potato, cut it open and smeared it on the screen which actually worked well enough to get me home - although obviously not reccomended!!
