replacement engine qustions?

just bought a passt tdi sport 110 98. the engine has locked up so im guessing its dead. anyway question is if i buy a engine from a breakers how will i know if ive been sold a genuine 110 or are the 90 and 110 engines the same. i know the turbos are diffrent.
would fitting a 90 into the car with all the 110 bits make a 110?

The 110 engine code is AFN, the 90 is AHU it is usually on a barcode sticker on the timing belt cover, not sure where the 'proper' engine number is on these..
I looked into the differences once, as far as I can remember, the cam, valves, pistons and head are the same. The turbo as you said, along with the injectors, ECU and exhaust are different. I couldn't say a 90 would def become a 110, but it looks possible?

thats handy to know i dident think of the injectors. there are some dodgy breakers around
