Strange Starting Issue

I wonder if anyone can help with this one please:

Normally when I press the key in my '06 Passat 2.0 tdi starts first time. A quick press and let go and it starts fine. Should do, it's just had a VAG service! Yesterday when I went to my car after work, I pressed the key in and the car would not start. The engine turned over but would not fire up.

Tried this 10 times - holding the key in for varying amounts of time, some long some short - no joy. Bearing in mind it started first time in the morning for the drive to work.

I thought 'no point in flattening the battery, it's not going to start' so I phoned the AA and registered a breakdown call and settled down to wait.

After 10 minutes or so, for some reason I decided to press the key in for a really long time and after around 10 seconds of turning over it started!

Sorry for long story, but can anyone throw any light on this please? Does it presage a problem?

P.S. Started OK today - quick press and away she goes.

You need a code read. Not just fault codes, but any stored data. That might show up a logged fault that went away. Did anything unusual show in the dash display. This is usually a steering lock/immobiliser fault but it could be a lot of things.

OK Thanks Martin. No, nothing showed in the dash display. Started fine this morning. Oh well, have to see if it happens again.
