    Hello everyone!

Right long story short... been having hesitation and jerkyness for the last couple of weeks. Had a poke around over the weekend to check the condition of the filters and oil etc.

Whilst under the bonnet, noticed some oily residue around the cam belt side of the engine bay.

I removed the engine cover and found the culprit although im not sure exactly what its for? (please see pics)

I've gathered its vacuum operated as the lever at the back moves when the throttle is pressed. I'm presuming its opening and closing some sort of flap within the intake manifold but thats as far as ive gone.

The car is covered by a third party warrenty, but i'm hoping its a cheapish part that i can replace without going through the paper trail with them.

Now this may or may not be the cause of the hesitation but imo if there is a vac leak there its not going to be helping the situation.

Any ideas or advice as to what the little sod is or a part number would be great, thanks in advance.

Oh and the car is my07 bkp 140.

    Cheers

That is the manifold flap actuator. This manifold is becoming a very serious issue on the 3C Passat. They cause power fluctuations and leak boost air and blow oil out onto the alternator. It is a reasonably easy job to change but the part is over £500. When I enquired last week, VAG UK had over 40 in stock and my local dealers keep two on the shelf so it is obviously becoming a big problem.

    Thanks for the reply Crasher!

Looks like ill be calling the warranty company then.

This would probably answer another query i had but thought nothing of... when the car comes onto boost there is the normal sound of the turbo spooling but after a few seconds it appears to stop although the car continues to pull strongly.

I suspect then that this boost air leaking out as the alternator has a nice film of the black stuff all over it (and not the nice irish black stuff that you drink)!

Its a shame that so many issues are being found on the 3c chassis as i think its a great car.

    Thanks again

Is this an issue with just the PD engines or does it effect the CR engines as well? Haven't come across this one yet to be honest. Must look out for it.

Another addition to the already long list of common faults on the B6!

It only affects PD 2 litre models with the variable inlet manifold such as 2007 onwards BMR, BUZ, BMA, BKP, BVE, BWV but also affects Touran/Golf 5/A3/Octavia 2/Altea/Leon 2/Toledo with BMN 170PS engines

Is it just that part that gets replaced or the whole manifold? Is it known what fails or causes the failure?

It is the complete manifold, the spindle seal fails.

I wonder if this is a weak-ish point on modern diesels? A couple of years ago when I was getting rid of my X-Type, I looked at BMW 320d saloons and was warned off them as there were loads of cases of swirl flaps breaking off and being ingested by the engine, leading to catastrophic failure.

Perhaps a lot of the issues we are seeing with the likes of the BKP engine are as a result of the headlong rush to provide a competitive product, fast, due to the changes in VED that took place a few years back?

Also on that point, yesterday a colleagues E90 320d 06 plate turbo failed. It runs the GT1749V turbo that i believe is also fitted to a variety of VAG engines including the 2.0pd (i think). Common siren type noise followed by a puff of smoke then the sound of the turbo chewing itself to death.

I agree that there seems to be a rush to create eco friendly high performance engines that unfortunately dont have the longevity or reliability of the older type diesels.
