grey/black smoke from my A4

Any idea why this morning I was getting grey/black smoke from my A4 2.0 TDI Avant? I admit, I was in the wrong kind of gear, 4 / 5 when I should have been in 2 or 3 - but should I be getting this? its got 95k on the clock!

All Diesels smoke when on full throttle, if you were in to high a gear and labouring the engine I would expect it to throw out some smoke.
All Diesels are tuned lean so they don't smoke, a diesel with good fueling or slightly richer will produce black smoke. There is s saying "No Smoke No Poke".

As long as it's not doing it all the time and only when labouring the engine or on full throttle then its fine.
