It is wrong, I added the recommended 4L yesterday, and the oil is covering the top ball on the stick, very bad design.

Have you got the 1.9 stick?

In my Skoda it was supposed to be as the stick bent back out at the top mark, thats if it is the same stick that is, the 2.0 is a horror story of a stick, must have been looking at the GPO tower at the time for inspiration.

Inded I have a 1.9 it has a bent bit and some dotted lines now I'm really confused.

So should I keep it up to the top bend or above the dotted bit Sorry if I sound a bit fick but can't afoord to wreck me motor

Top bend, that stick is a hell of a lot more user friendly than the 2.0 one is.

Adding four litres of oil from empty puts the level halfway over the top ball above the max mark, so VW obviously had a guess at measurements for this stick, and the colour would help also, still orange dye is expensive isn't it.

IMO the handbook description/instructions are as bad as the design. IIRR the handbook says if the level is in the OK area half a litre can be added. I used to find if the level was just into the OK area adding a quarter litre was enough to cover the MAX area. Therefore the handbook instructions (MAX = no top-up, OK = optional top up of half a litre, MIN = must top up a whole litre) can be taken to imply that a level above the MAX area is acceptable.

It seems to me like an attempt to boil down the top up requirement into 3 simple options (nothing/half/whole) that fails in practice due the dipstick design/colour.

The same system applies to the CR engines but the dipstick is pale grey, of constant shape and much easier to read.
