Hi all I have 2006 3.0tdi and last week the engine light came on phoned Audi and With good efficiency they check the car and told me that it was the throttle body that failed. I wanted to know if this a common problem as I think that a 4 years old car should not have this problem.
Also does anybody know the cost of an extended warranty for the A8 ?

Maybe I am missing something here but does a diesel have a throttle? I thought that was just on petrol car. Is a diesel engine not adjusted via the diesel fuel injection pump?

Hi, I also have a 2006 3.0tdi A8 and a couple of months ago had the same problem of failed throttle body, jammed in the fully open position. I opened it up and there were almost no teeth left on two of the small plastic gear wheels inside! Rest of the unit was perfect, this expensive part had failed just because its manufacturer used a cheap plastic internal component. Apparently many newer generation throttle bodies fail this way shortly after the warranty expires, it's quite common and not just related to this car or Audi.

At least its a part which is easily accessible though and simple to change, also the engine seems to drive fine with the valve fully open so you can perhaps take some time to try and find a second hand part at much lower cost.

The manifold flaps are a well known failure on this engine.

The other option is if you know any model makers who enjoy a challenge they could make you a new pair of gears out of brass or something more durable! You'd be surprised at what the supplers for this market have.

This is just one such supplier if you do a quick google search you will find more. If you have a vernier you can take some measurements and possibly find the right ones off the shelf and save a lot of dosh.
