Hi everyone. It's a while since I have been on here, mainly because I have had about 20k of trouble free enjoyable motoring in the bora.

BUT I now have a problem! The cruise control has stopped working. When I turn in on on the indicator stalk the light comes on on the dash. However, the 'Set' 'Res' buttons are not working.

Any ideas as to what the problem is? Is it likely to just be the switch on the steering wheel, and if so, is it a simple job to replace it? I don't like not having the cruise as I'm so used to it. (Plus it is my first line of defence against average speed cameras!).

Crasher - I see you're top poster - good work. Did TDIBoraSam ever get to the bottom of his steering problems??

your clutch pedal and brake pedal have switches that cause the cruise to disengage, I think the brake switch has it integrated and as the brake switch is working i'd look at the clutch switch.

If the pedal, when released does not compress the switch then the cruise will never engage.

I had a similar problem on my old alfa when the pedal circlip broke and the pedal returned fully home and completely compressed the self adjusting switch.
All I needed to do was compress the pedal and at the same time pull the switch plunger out (it has a ratchet mechanism to self adjust) and then let the pedal back up which allowed the switch to readjust.

I fully imagine there is a similar problem with yours. All it takes is to knock the switch with a shoe or the vacuum cleaner or something to stop it working, then again, theswitch could have come loose or just plain broke.

I would start with a fault code read and if nothing came up, check the measuring block data for the clutch and brake pedal switches, if that was OK I would then check the blocks for the stalk switches and hopefully find a fault by that point. I did have one once that was bizarre, the ECU had lost its Geschwindigkeitsregelanlage (cruise control) coding, which is indicated by a G at the end of the ECU number on the diagnostic display. Mind you, the chap had a copy of VAG-COM and although he denied it I think he had a case of “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing” and had been playing. All I had to do was login and recode it. The clutch pedal switch on my Octavia failed in the down position but the cruise still worked which surprised me, they only reason I knew something was wrong was that I pressed the clutch with the cruise activated and the revs jumped up a little momentarily. I thought the cruise would not engage with the pedal depressed but obviously the software is cleverer than I gave it credit for.

I fixed Sam’s steering with two new track rods but it has gone wrong again, the cart is driving him bonkers. A while after I fitted new track rods the not very old rack failed and since then I has been playing up again.
