Driver Window Problem

My driver's window was making a grinding/crunching sound for a little while until eventually refusing to move at all, despite still making the noise. Looks like the motor has gone?

I have been quoted a ridiculous amount from a garage to get it fixed.

What is the part I need if I wanted to buy it myself (and pay a local mechanic to fit)?

The motor should be fine, the grinding noise is usually the cable snapping and getting wound up round the regulator.

You'll need a new window regulator (inner door skin with the guide channels and cables pre-attached)

Also, is it something I could fit myself or is it relatively complicated?

I got my two Passat and one Ibiza ones from the now defunct VAGParts.

I got my most recent one, a Touran rear door from C&R Enterprises.

I've no idea what the Passat ones cost now, but I paid around £90 a few years ago.

I wouldn't say it was complicated, but it is a pain in the *** to get it all sorted.

I used this guide and a lot of trial and error

VW quoted me £200 just to have a look at what the problem was, which is why I decided to do it myself.

Search eBay for "Passat window regulator repair kits" or something along those lines - they cost about £20 and are pretty straight forward to fit in an hour or so.

EDIT:
The guide referred to above looks to be pretty much what I did except that 1. I removed the glass rather than tried to tape it in position (it lifts out easily once the clamp is loosened) and 2. I didn't remove the door lock which meant I had to do everything in situ rather than totally removing the panel, but there was enough slack in everything that it didn't make things particularly difficult.

Seems there's a Passat repair kit out now - brilliant - so pleased I took 25% of my car to pieces to fix mine.

Should make the job a lot easier.
