Hello people, just wondering if anyone here has had their gearbox oil changed on a passat tdi 130 pd.
I asked wayside for a price to change mine a while back and they look at me gone out!!!!!
Asked me why i wanted to change it as it is longlife / lifetime oil, is it notchey etc. I just told them i thought it would be good to change the oil.
I spoke to a gearbox specialist and he recomended the oil was changed every 3 yearly regardless.
My car is going in on the 20th for a service and front brakes, thinking of telling them to change the gearbox oil for me.
    What are your thoughts please.
    Cheers

I changed the gear oil on my 5 speed Passat with the correct VW oil. The gear change was much better afterwards and I felt better also.
If you try to do the job youself, make sure you have the correct key to get the bung off. My local garage who did the job had to borrow a key off a VW garage.

I changed mine also with the vw g52 gear oil. Its pricey but I thought I was doing the right thing. Its an awkward job cos its right under the middle of the car.
When I drained the old oil it looked absolutely perfect, so some would think it a waste of money.
Same as Qman5, I felt better after doing it. This car is hopefully gonna last me a while!

For a full service with all the filters, front discs and pads and the gearbox oil change............£415.
Seems very expensive, have you had a few quotes?

£415 ouch, glad I do most of mine myself, 4litres of oil,oil filter(mann) Cabin filter, air filter and Muhl fuel filter cost me €72 here in Ireland.
Air filter 5 min job, cabin filter 10 mins, fuel filter 5 mins and the only tricky job was removing the oil filter cap, had to borrow a mates strap wrench but in all 20 mins job.
I am a Photocopier engineer by trade and most people can tackle these jobs.. We are in a massive recession here and most people repair there own cars, my 2001 passat is only probaly worth 2 grand stirling so spending £415 around €500 euro would gut me!!
Anyway good luck and a ta least you will get a stamped serv history which is almost impossible here..

    Thanks

I've gone over to doing my own servicing - no problem especially with a Pela oil extractor. Only thing I've not been able to do is check the gearbox oil level. Does anyone know if this can be done without removing the undertray?
