I have an A4 B6 1.8T sport 2001. About 2 months ago while driving with the window down I heard a rattle coming from outside the car. This noise gets louder and more frequent when driving over bumps and crappy road surfaces, but stops with even the smallest amount of braking.
I had new discs and pads fitted to the front about 4 months ago so thought that might have something to do with it, so removed all wheels to check calipers, discs etc. and nothing!
The car passed an MOT last week so surely cant be anything too serious.
I have jacked the car up numerous times to look underneath but as yet have found nothing.
You cant hear the rattle with the windows up but its summer!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, cheers

Sir , did you fit genuine pads and discs or decent makes from a motor factors?
Chances are that you fitted after market products, and why not, and like so many pattern parts the fit is not 100% and therefore your pads are rattling.
If we ignore you brakes for a moment you might like to inspect your suspension components ,ie; bushes, joints etc
    Good luck

Yeah, patten parts I'm afraid. Not ideal I know but moneys pretty tight right about now. Just got the car back on the road after having to sort out broken wire in passenger door ( which meant the door wouldn't open from inside or out, great! ). Spent a fortune on it this year so at the minute I'm not really backing ' the Audi build quality '!
Right, I'll put my violin away now, lol! I've checked suspension components and can't see anything. The pads feel like they're in there nice and snug but I'll drop it my mechanic tommoro to check I suppose.

    Cheers

If the ratteling doesn't stop when you apply the breaks gently then it's not the breaks.. Is it your door handle ?
copper grease on my pads cured my ratteling. I have heard if left too long they can wear into the calipers, then the only way to fix is replace the calipers too.

One of the guys on the Seatcupra.net forum reported a simlar problem with his LC, after countless trips to he dealer and the brakes being taken apart several times, they did eventually cure it with new discs and pads that were OEM. Have you tried copper grease on your pads?
    Options being considered:-
    312mm Brake upgrade - Definite
    Remap - Definite
Hybrid Turbo and Custom map - hmmmm
    Decat - hmmm

A spot of silicone sealant on the back of the pads will cure it.
or as stated above, genuine pads

ive just finished fixing my door wires, both doors needed fixing, bullet connectors and insulation tape did the trick.

i bought my a4 b6 about 6 months ago and initially was really disapointed with all the rattles and knocks, but ive since solved them all myself and i have to say, for an 8 year old car its pretty amazing..keep at it, its worth it in the end

If it stops when you apply the brakes, that shows my, and many others, opinion that the lesser quality pads are rattling in their carrier until the piston applies pressure to them

    thats why opinions are great!!!!

Think its the brakes too, but the door handle ratteling is an easy thing to check and thought it was a good suggestion...

got new mintex pads with double sided sticky tape on them as standard.. Not a sound out of them, hold in position, great!!
