I have a 2005 Golf 2.0GT Tdi. My cruise control operates intermittently. Sometimes it will stay engaged as normal for a couple of hours then disengage itself (light on the dashboard goes out) and will not work again until the car is turned off then restarted.
Other times the light on the dash comes on when the ignition is turned on but goes off as soon as the engine is started, before the cruise control is engaged.

    Any ideas on possible causes?

    Thanks
    Gordon

    Clutch or brake pedal switch?

Get a VAGCOM fault code scan to point you in the right direction.

Interesting to see your post as I'd just logged in to report the same thing and ask for help.

My car is also a 2005 2.0 GT TDI DSG and does exactly the same - the green cruise control light on the dash disappears apparently at random and needs the "Microsoft" treatment (stop and restart!) to make it work again. It can go for minutes, hours or days between occurences of the problem.

I'll be due a service shortly so I guess I'll ask them to read the fault codes then unless anyone has any bright ideas. I can't see anything wrong with the brake light switch, is there an additional one specifically for the cruise control?

My car occasionally exhibits this problem. Fortunately it doesn't happen too often, sometimes going several months between it happening.

I have heard this is caused by a faulty control stalk and is fixed by simply replacing this. Not sure how much this would cost. Probably around the £100 mark and should be easily replaced by yourself.

I've only once found a fault logged by VCDS which I read to apparently confirm the faulty control stalk theory. Does not always appear after the cruise control trips out though:

    Hope this helps,

Good to know. Was the £63 unit a replacement control stalk? You couldn't reply with the part number could you? Might help me as I think I might need to do the same repair soon.

    Thanks,
