    Oh dear recent SE buyers?

We're adding even more value to the Golf range, with the launch of the new Golf Match. It's based on the current SE trim, but packs in over £1,600-worth of extras for a mere £300 over the outgoing model.

To differentiate the Golf Match from the SE, it comes with unique 16-inch Croft alloy wheels instead of the SE's Atlanta wheels, but it's not just more style that the Match offers. Additional features include:

Leather multi-function steering wheel (worth £430)
    DAB digital radio receiver (£175)
    Bluetooth (£240)
Parking sensors front and rear (£420)
    RCD 510 touchscreen six-CD autochanger (£380)
    16-inch Croft alloy wheels

The SE already accounts for around half of Golf sales since its launch in the UK, and we expect the Match to be even more popular, especially in the profitable retail market.

The built-in Bluetooth and multi-function steering wheel makes making and taking calls on the move a cinch. This is a new, factory fitted, fully integrated Bluetooth system, which makes use of the standard RCD 510 audio system's touch-screen and the multi-function steering wheel. Information will be displayed on the RCD 510's screen at the touch of a button. It has hands-free profile (HFP) compatibility, which means it has greater compatibility than the previous factory-fit system (rSAP) and works with iPhone, Blackberry, and the majority of mobile phones on the market. A phone compatibility list will be added to this bulletin once available. This Bluetooth telephone system also replaces the optional (rSAP) telephone preparation on Golf GT models and above at a price of £240.

Music lovers will enjoy the crystal-clear reception from the Golf Match's standard DAB radio and the ease of accessing their iPod's music library using the multi-device interface and touch-screen display. Of course, customers can also use a USB memory stick, an SD memory card, any type of music player (via aux-in) or a CD using the built-in six-disc CD changer. The RCD 510 is the kind of sophisticated audio system that will quite literally be music to customers' ears. And if they'd like to upgrade to a Dynaudio soundpack, that's now an extremely affordable £355 upgrade.

With standard front and rear parking sensors, the option of Park Assist also becomes even better value on the Golf Match, at just £80.

Even more efficiency with BlueMotion Technology
The Golf SE BlueMotion Technology is also being replaced with a Golf Match BlueMotion Technology. This comes with all the value-packed extras of the standard Golf Match, and the addition of start/stop system and recuperation (which charges the battery using energy from braking).

Not only is the Golf Match BlueMotion Technology model available with the 1.6 TDI 105 PS engine, it is also now available with the new 2.0 TDI 140 PS engine. With emissions of just 114g/km this is a great-value model for company car drivers and the environmentally conscious who don't want to compromise on performance. In fact, a 40 per cent tax payer could save over £1,000 in company car tax over three years thanks to this model’s 13 per cent Benefit in Kind tax rate.

Yet another marketting ploy - all that extra kit for only £300 extra. Shows just how much money they make on an SE if they can afford to give supposedly £1300 of kit away on the Match for nothing.

They'd be better off knocking £1000 off the list price of the SE if they want to keep sales up !

This looks like quite a good move by VW. The problem with the SE was its lack of equipment compared to the previous Golf MK5 Match, i.e. Leather MFSW and 'Highline' display.

This has been adressed direcetly, and as well as that your getting an updated alloy design, RCD 510 with DAB & Bluetooth (first car in sector to offer that standard) and parking sensors, all for just £300. If you purchase through a broker you would be looking at £16k for the TSI 122, so its a lot of car for the money.

The TDI 140 Bluemotion Technologies also looks impressive, with just 114g/ km CO2 its offering the best combination of power and economy in the sector. Previousley the BMW 118d was best, but VW have improved on the 1-series' figures.

The Match does however signal that the MK7 Golf can be expected within the next 24 months, as its historically always been a 'run out' model. It was introduced on the MK5 in late 2006 offering loads of equipment over the SE back then, and 2-years later the MK6 arrived.

Another point worth noting - will VW update the GT? The 2011 Match has DAB, RCD510, Bluetooth, Parking sensors and Convinence Park fitted as standard which are all missing on the more expensive model.

Yeah telll me about it... my gt, due to built week 22, brought forward without telling me to week 18. I guess on the upside there is hardly any change to the gt model.

If you were happy to spec 17" seattle wheels (the biggest option) and your other options against the new Match model , you'd probably save £1500 - a decent saving for the sake of different seat cloth !

I think its crazy, the GT is now even lower spec than it was compared to the SE ( you need the convenience pack to bring it up to the same spec).

What kind of marketing is that, "yes sir that car costs £2k more but you get much less kit, but it does go faster".
To spec a GT up to the same level as the Match you are going to have to pay an extra £2k over the list price of £20,250.

They are robbing the british public just because we have the stupid CO2 tax system, which means the GT is not selling as well as the SE in this country.

I long for the old days when you chose the spec you want from base to lux and then the engine.
    Makes much more sense.

I would be sick as a parrot if I had just ordered an SE, I would cancel the order immediately and wait 4 weeks to get the Match

I thought the CO2 differences between the 122PS and 160PS were as little as 1m/g and in the UK they sit in the same tax band?

Is the GT selling better in Europe?

It is still very much like that, with the exception of UK Golfs. Look at the Audi A3 for instance, the cooking spec 1.6 engines can be had in all trims from base to S-Line.

Correct, the CO2 emissions of the GT TDI 140 (with or without Bluemotion Technologies) is the same as the Match TDI 140, and the GT TSI 160 is in the same band as the Match & S TSI 122.

In mainland Europe its sold as a Golf Highline, and is available with the 1.4 TSI 122/ 160, 1.6 TDI 105 and 2.0 TDI 140. VW-UK simply choose to remarket it as a "GT" in UK (even though technically its not) and only allow customers to purchase with the 1.4 TSI 160 and 2.0 TDI 140.

Similarily, the Comfortline in Europe (equiv to our Match/ SE) is offered with the entire range of engines, rather than restricted to the 3 best sellers.

VW-UK are simply importing, adding some options, selecting some engines to offer and readvertising under a new name.
