Mate of mine has a B6 Passat PD140 and it broke down yesterday leaving his missus and 3 month old stuck on the motorway. breakdown service just towed it home. Popped in and checked for error codes this morning for him - just one 01314 -036 ECM sporadic communications. Googling shows this is quite easy to generate just with a failed start. No other codes.

It does start, takes a fair amount of cranking - which doesn't feel smooth, and then feels like it is miss firing. Any thoughts on the problem? One of my thoughts was a failed injector - he called his local garage who said unplug the Air flow meter and try to start it. He will try that later but the symptoms seem a bit extreme to me for that.

Anything sound familiar to others? or any ideas?

    miss firing with a diesel?
If the engine is shut down there must be an error code.
    Thry the disconnected airflow meter.
    Already checked the oil level?

Not sure to be honest, I assume the one in the tank, which ever was the subject of the recall.
