i was stuck in traffic the other day and was redirected by the sat nav. Was quite chuffed with this and was wondering 2 things: How does it do this? And also is this a subscription service and will i have to get a new disc every year? Will probably download if possible, any ideas?

There are thousands of cameras strewn across the motorway that measure vehicle speeds between 2 points and also volume of traffic between points, some are automatic and some visual like you see on the travel news, these cameras send messages to local radio stations and your car picks the data stream off these channels and displays on your sat nav

As for the subscription service it depends, on a TomTom it is subscription, but on RNS-E the 2k you paid to Audi included a one off fee they paid

    Cheers mate

I did pay for it once on the tomtom sat nav but it was a rip off to me, as i only used my car now & then for work etc... .
but only about 5k a year if that, so i used the traffic report for 6 months only.

however on the audi i have just had for a week it is great, as it as changed the route a few times & updated me about traffic hold ups etc.

great ideas from audi to have it on the rns-e

so do you reckon that even though i retro fitted my sat nav and used whatever disc came with it from ebay, i should have traffic updates for ever? Sweet.
