I think manufacturers deliberately set them conservatively, so you don't run out before it gets to zero. Would not be surprised if 20-30 miles could be done with it showing zero.
Seem to vaguely remember Clarkson driving an A8 tdi from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of fuel. His gauge got to zero on the M1 miles before getting back to London (somewhere between Nottingham and Milton Keynes?) I'm aware some stuff on TG is a little contrived or 'set up', but its not too far from the truth.

Oh, did 564miles on about 64litres on a run recently (don't like running on vapours myself - never know what else might have settled on the bottom of my fuel tank)

    ok. Update time.

Drove to glasgow bellshill between 55 and 60 mph all the way, 2 stops en route, toilet on m6 and maccy d's in preston. Arrived 11am. Some running around later. Then the return trip done between 55 and 70, did the return run non stop except for heavy traffic at m6 20 - 19 and 11 - 10. Left bellshill 745 am arrived home 1315. The dis was telling me 620 miles with 180 remaining range and the fuel gauge was 1/4 full. Don't yet know how many miles i've got out the tank as i'm still running about on it.

2.0T 2WD Avant - I generally refill at around 480, I have managed about 520 with the gauge showing zero miles left but I've never got more than about 65 litres in there. If it is a 70-litre tank then the gauge is conservative... I do mostly motorways/main roads but don't hang about so I'm really happy with this economy, which is much better than expected. I do notice a really big drop off if cruising at higher speeds though, much more so than the larger capacity V6's I've generally had before (which were in turn much worse for economy in normal and especially town driving).

    Afternoon All,

I'm game for this little one, I'll fill the car up tonight to the brim, reset the counter note the miles drive like a god and see how far I can get.
    Mine is a 2.0Tdi Sline 140 (no chip). . . . ((YET)).

I could be a while with my reply any bets on how far I'll get.

    Mark.

Got 590 miles on 61 litres last week on holiday in Wales from my 170TDi. No motorways and fully loaded. DIS showed 41.5mpg but the fill-up shows about 44.

Long term average is 43.5 on DIS which is probably nearer to 46 real life. that would be over 700 on my 70 litre tank - never proved that though...

Anyone put 70 litres in in one go???

    Morning All,

Brimmed my tank Wednesday evening, DIS showing over 800 miles, but that's probably because I'd just done a fairly long motorway run.
    So 722 to beat then.

Well I'm 80 miles into the tank and the fuel gague hasn't moved yet. . . .DIS still saying 800 miles drops just below when on the A roads.

800 miles is about 2 1/2 weeks driving for me, so I'll let you know how I get on.

Just driven to the South of France...and back.

I was hoping for some serious fuel economy as I set the cruise to 70mph, but had not counted for the 2 adults, 2 kids, full boot, roof box and bike on the roof. It reduced my mpg by about 15, so only got 560 miles out of a full tank.

Still pretty good considering the considerable extra weight and reduced aerodynamics.

    Morning All,

So I said it could take a while, I've almost forgotten where my local petrol station is.
So I'm on half a tank now and cover 380 miles ish. Trip say's about 320 to go, but we all know the second half of your tank goes a lot quicker than the first.
So anyway judging by this I Reckon I'll get between 730/750 and over two weeks driving.
As soon as this is over I'm going to put my normal £30 in and give it a good thrash. (well being a diesel I'll rev it to 3000 instead of 2000).
Just another quick one, whats the least anyone has got on a tank.

I used to have an A6 2.8se, loaded up with 4 blokes, 4 set's of golf clubs 4 over night bag's a heavy right foot and well over an hour at over 100, chasing an XK8. Tip tronic on the go all the way, loads of fun but suprised when I arrived at my destination and the fuel light came on. Only 150miles from home. That was an expessive golf weekend.

Be back in 350 miles time.

    Mark.
