I've asked on another forum without luck! Regarding Audi 80 1.8 1986, when engine is at normal running temperature I can hear a groaning metalic noise coming from the front of the engine but only when hot not when the engine is cold and if I rev the engine just a little bit the noise isn't there, so only when the engine is at idle. I have listened to the cambelt and alternator but doesn't seem to be coming from there. Thanks for any replies and help!

power steering pump? You could try taking the alternator and power steering belts off briefly? see if it goes away.

Hi, No I don't have PAS! This noise only starts when the engine is at normal temperature but not when cold, and if I rev the engine a little bit the noise is not there.

I suggest you remove the top half of the timing belt cover, check the condition of the timing belt tensioner. probably worth changing it anyway, I think 8v ones are approx Ł15. If this seizes it breaks the belt quite quickly - ask me how I know!

To check this noise I want to remove the drive belt that drives the alternator and water pump but when the engines is hot how long can I run the engine without the belt on?

The alternator warning light will come on and water pump will stop but this shouldn't cause any problem whilst you check for noise for a few minutes. How long does it take to check if noise is there or not ?

It shouldn't take long to check, I'm not sure if it's the timing belt, alternator or water pump the noise is coming from those area's but difficult to pin point. If it stops with the drive belt off then I can rule out the timing belt. I have a feeling it's the water pump but it was replaced last October and I haven't used much.
