Hi, I recently purchased a VW T4 2.4d. The van starts on the button but seems to give out blue smoke on hard acceleration. the engine seems smooth to a point when you gradually increae the acceleration then turns a bit rattly and thats when the blue smoke seems to come. When warm, there doesn't seem to be a problem - the engine is still slightly rattly if pushed - any ideas anyone?

Is this terminal and are there any test that i can do to determine exactly why this is happening? if its bad, what might it cost to repair?

    Dan

Blue smoke generally ( I think) means it's burning oil, could be the valve guides worn, or piston rings.

I would get the oil & filter changed asap, and see how it goes.

The rattle could be the valve lifters, but also may be poor oil pressure.

    Robert.

cheers Bob - i wil get the oil and filter done asap. A i mentioned, it seems fine if you don't push the revs too hard. and its only recently passed an MOT?!

If it is the valve lifters, the valve guides, or low oil pressure then what should i expect to pay to get it done?

I think mine cost about £280 to replace, but that was 3 years ago, and they were the worse the mech had ever seen.He was a private VW specialist trained by VW.

I had them done because I couldn't hear the radio because of the horrendous tappaing sound.

If you feel c onfidnt enough you could do the oil and filter yourself, also check that the cam belt has been done, and if you have no documented proof, then get it done.

Cam-belt, valve lifters, & full service will cost about £500.00

its got 136k on it at the mo and the last cam was at 90k. so thats about due. oil & filter won't be a prob. mine does not sound as rattly as yours was prevuiously so maybe the lifters are ok? my real concern is that blue smoke which coincides with the rattly engine note on hard acceleration biut which does not pose any issues on normal driving?!

I hope the oil change sorts it all out as £500 is a lot of money that i don't have!
