Alternator has gone and for the life of me I cannot find the correct part number for the alternator.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the correct part number and a good source for a cost effective replacement please?

Car is a A6 Avant, 6 speed manual, 2.5 Tdi.

    Thanks in advance!

If you want to exchange, the old one you need to know if you have a Bosch or Valeo unit. It may be a Bosch 120A VAG part number 059 903 015 or a Valeo 120A 059 903 015 G. We often have this problem in the workshop and the only way you can deal with it is to remove the old unit to see what it is. From Audi these units are stupidly expensive at around £500+ so once you know the unit you can source one elsewhere.

Ah, I see - I guess you can only exchange like for like in terms of brand...

Can you suggest a good replacement source?

We buy them from a local company under the Cargo brand name

or sometimes we buy genuine if the customer wants the best quality. Sometimes we get Hell or Bosch from GSF or Andrew Page, it varies.

I know these guys have a 51 A4 2.5TDi in for breaking, looked complete yesterday except the front bumper/radiator missing.

Their prices have always been reasonable

Thanks for the replies - how is the original one removed?

Does the lock carrier have to come forwards, or can it be removed without pulling it's face off?

Is it held on with just the two mounts at the front, or is there a third one at the back?

Could do with a 'best technique' to get it off.... thanks!

Can anybody out there pass on their wisdom regarding the removal of the alternator please? Thanks Ron.

Remove the front bumper, slide the front of the car into service position, remove the alternator. Some people do it without removing the front but I can’t get my hands in.

. Thanks for responding so quickly. I would like to shake the hand of any body who can get their hands in the space available. They must be made of rubber or employ child labour ! Last triumph's query is the same as mine he's my son and trying to help an old man on a crap pension with very limited computer skills from spending too much.
I have enquired through Euro car parts and they have confirmed that from my car reg. and vin number the alternator is a Lucas unit. Is this the same as Valeo, only I have never heared of this name?
I notice you support the Vulcan project, I'm a Victor man myself, Shiny Ten squadron based at Honington in the sixties, Happy days !

I have only ever seen Bosch or Valeo and indeed VAG’s parts system mentions nothing else. I suppose Lucas offer a recon of either the Bosch or Valeo but I always remove it and then get the new unit.

Bruntingthorpe has an active Victor; they have just given it a new coat of paint. They got into trouble a few months back after a fast taxi run ended up being a hop…
