Just so you know, I've just had this dreaded failure happen to me. Car is at the dealership and their diagnosing the problem.

I've heard some horror stories on here about car's being right off's when they experience this issue. I change the oil every 10K with Castrol Edge, why have they designed such a un-robust engine.

I'm afraid, if this is a right off, I'm leaving the VW group for good - would obviously miss you guys

FYI - The car made 125K

    Don`t suppose it`s a 140TDI 55/06/56 reg?

If so sounds like the much publicised oil pump drive failure which lots of poor unfortunates (me included) have suffered. At least mine was covered by warranty.

VW-AUDI know of the problem, and its a scandal that they weren`t recalled.

With a bit of luck mine will be gone soon, quite possibly in favour of a Hyndai Santa Fe - incredible reliability and a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. VW-AUDI would go bust in months if they offered that.

Having recently purchased a 56-plate 140TDI, this worries me - a lot! Does the issue affect all 140TDI engines, or only a batch? Is there anything that can be done in terms of prevention?

Mainly the engine code BKP, and it's worth checking with your dealer as to whether the car has had all the recall work carried out - a quick look on their system may put your mind at rest. AFAIK (not being a TDI owner), as long as you've had the recall work done then you should not be at a higher risk of any fatal failure than anyone else.

    Yep, a 55 plate 2.0TDI 140 bhp.
Will check the engine code tomorrow, but knowing my luck, it won't be covered.

fat_controller, I love this car, and I assume you do to but if I were you, get shot of it asap, it's not worth the hassle. At 4 months, you should get close to your money back

There has been no recall for this fault, which affects all the groups cars (Audi, Seat, Skoda as well) fitted with the defective part.

If you`re in warranty great, if not I suspect you`re on your own

I believe you are right, I've never found any recall info on it myself, infact there are 3 major issues VW should be brought to book on if the car is less than 100k used,

    1 - Oil Pump
    2 - Injectors
    3 - Steering ECU

All have real hefty repair costs attached to them, and it simply isn't good enough a major player like VW can just fob you off and deny responsibility, it wouldn't hurt if they at least offered a cost part replacement, and wiped off the labour, that way everyone wins, still as time goes on the message might sink in, many ppl who own VAG cars are walking, VW thinks the Passat needs a lift to remain competitive, it isn't the look of the car, it's the fact they won't back the car up and ppl know it.

Turbo is on eurocarparts.co.uk for around £550.

    http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Vo...Turbo-Chargers

    Makes are
G-Force and OE Quality Turbo Charger, £600 and £960 respectively.
Any one know if these makes are any good

Whatever you do, don't buy one from VW, the same turbo can be bought for a lot less either from the ppl above, or GSF, or even Garrett, if it's their turbo that is fitted to the car.
