After a brief(ish) flirtation with a quick but very thirsty Mazda I need to be sensible again.. commute going from 16 miles a day to 50+ in the next few months so 22 - 23mpg and and liking for super unleaded isn't really an option.. ££££££

So, without starting a war.. I'm looking at the B7 A4 Avant TDi, probably S-Line or Passat TDi Estate - whats the recommendations? Had an A4 1.8T 190 a while ago and loved it (apart from the headlights that were next to useless).. I know they're pretty similar underneath but is there really that much difference?

I'll not even mention too much about the bmw 320d that I looked at, or the Alpina D3 that keeps coming up on the autotrader search....

    Cheers
    Chris

Probably the A4. Imo the Passat is too managerial and bland looking :/

Well saying that I wouldnt turn down a Passat but I wouldnt choose it over an A4

With the A4 you'll get the S-Line styling, bigger wheels etc. Plus, if you go for the 3.0TDI youll get heap-loads of power and bucketfulls of torque all combined with high 30's mpg

You'll proably have to post this on the Passat forum to get a balanced opinion on what cars from people on both forums.

    I know...

    An A6 Avant, with HIDs!

    Or an A4.

Haven't the foggiest what you're on about, my A6 doesn't have headlights. Although, getting out of my car to relight those roman candles each night does get tiring.

Anyway, with a bit of modification, he could have super duper lighting like this:

    Don't buy a Rover

An Alfa Romeo, I should of bought an Alfa. Life is just so short to be sensible.

Back on topic, I do like the A4 in any guise very much, though an Alfa would be more fun

Oh and I would not touch a Passat with anything long, they are dull and old one's leak.
    One German, Two Italian.
    It's a Mercedes Benzzzz though

The Golf set up would just about sort out the problems with the lights on the A4... we don't get street lights up here - still managing to live off the road kill from when I had the A4. Looking about there aren't many B7 A4's with the xenons.

Had a really unhelpful discussion with Audi dealer today, told him what I wanted and he seemed intent on selling me a A3 cabrio . VW dealer better, but fell asleep in the Passat.....

I had a 156 2.4 JTD alfa, the 5cylinder job, remapped to 180bhp, went through steering arms like no-ones business, terrible build quality but lovely inside.

id avoid the B7 16v 2.0 TDI's, not great on fuel and dodgy clutches

new beemers are waaaay ahead, diesel wise
