I wonder if someone can put me out of my misery.

I've have a Golf Mk IV (2002) PD 130 est with a constant drip from the air con exchanger on the of the driver side just in front of the front wheel. It seems to be a mixture of oil and water but I don't understand why that should be. I have to top up the engine oil quite regularly.

I took it to a garage and they put some rubber seal round the joint but of course, that made no difference.

I'd be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this and if there's anything I can do about it.

    Cheers

In front of the drivers side wheel and just behind the bumper is the intercooler. Is this what you're talking about? If so, then there will always be small amounts of oil present that can leak out from the joint where the pipe meets the intercooler. However if there is loads, that could indicate more of a problem.

There shouldn't be any water in those pipes though. You sure there isn't a leak from above somewhere, like the screen washer bottle?

It sounds like the intercooler right enough. Its got a big rubber pipe into it and what looks like a radiator grill. I guess this is just to intake air.

I can't see any sign of a leak from the water containers above but I'll take a closer look. I never have to put top up the water except when I use screen washers but I do have to top up the engine oil regularly.

    Many thanks for you help.

The radiator part is where the hot air that has been compressed by the turbo is cooled. This allows a greater mass of air (and consequently fuel) to be fed into the engine. The air intake is on the N/S.

I've been barking up the wrong tree thinking it was something to do with the A/C.

Could the oil becoming from the turbo somehow?

If you have large quantities of oil in the intercooler pipe, then I suppose the seals within the turbo are letting oil leak past them. God knows where else the water is coming from.
