    Hi

Was there ever a factory fitted sat nav for the B5 or B5.5? i have the B5.5.

I was looking at my manual and in the front the illustration showed a sat nav and said the radio may be different to that shown, is this for an RS4 or something? it looked like double din yet had the cup holder and adjacent buttons and the air con panel below but i have no idea how that would fit in mine as its only single din.

    any ideas?

Yes there was. My '99 2.8Q (B5.5) was factory-fitted with the RNS-D (or is it an RNS-C? - I read they look identical but RNS-D is CANBUS) "Navigation Plus" (a staggering, nearly £2K option!). It's a double-din unit with an integral facia panel to fit the shape of the centre console. The RNS-C/D was the first-generation sat-nav with an integral CD-ROM disk drive (for nav. only). It is linked to a 6-CD changer / amp in the boot. Not sure if the TV tuner is integral with the head unit or is in the boot. However, I would love to get mine to show digital TV. I only had the car a week before they switched analogue off!

It's pretty old-skool, but dead cool, looks great and sounds fantastic. Only shame is the sat nav is slow to programme as it all steam-driven from the CD. The last map versions were 2007. Mine must be earlier I think as it doesn't have postcode support. You can still buy genuine software for around £75 but then why not just get a NAvman or TomTom LOL!.

Saw one on Ebay a while ago in full working order but still wanted £350.

aw sounds awesome, shame really cos £350 is about double of what i was willing to pay if ti were to fit?!. i will keep an eye out because i hate the ugliness of my after market £60 usb stereo.

maybe i can find one in a scrap yard. i did manage to find genuine RS4 17" style alloys with tires for £110 so im always optimistic!

It'll be difficult to retrofit one I fear. If you want the original setup, you'll need not only the head unit, but the Audi wiring loom(s), the amp/tuner/CD changer, and the integrated GPS Receiver/amplifier roof aerial. All this stuff is factory integrated before trim install, and probably a helluva job to remove all the necessary trim to get access. Finally, you would have to use diagnostics to configure it all to work properly and maybe other stuff I'm too thick to understand. Good luck though.

the double din conversion parts are hard to come by, very rare as they are only on the very last b5

    been searching for years!!
you need cage, console, h/brake console, ashtray, heater control and gearshift surround

thats before you think of fitting the nav

or get all the bits from a scrapper out of a post 2000 TDI (I think) and then fit a double DIN genuine B5 headunit, which has a single CD in it, and also can control the rear CD changer.
Did it to my 99 A4 when the OE Concert unit exhibited the volume fault. It was all just a nuts and bolt jot.

You have to get the a/c controller also, as this is a different size for the double DIN size head units.
