Thought I would share this with you all.

A few weeks ago I went camping in Rutland with the Passat estate and family - luvley time was had.

My friends were Glamping (Glamorous camping) so they had electric hook up, heaters, fridges, toilets. We were camping so had a tent, chairs and table and a gas cooker.

I have an iPhone and they both have Blackberries so the banter had already started but each time I was over at their pitches I docked my iPhone in their iPod music docks (yes they had the lot) and stole a charge.

After a few days the guilt (and admission that the iPhone battery life is rather poor) started to creep in so I felt that I should switch my ignition on and charge my iPhone via the 12v socket (circuit dead unless ignition on).

All went well until the last day when I left it on charge for 5 hours (air con turned off) while I packed the tent and stuff. When I came to move the car a few feet for loading the battery was flat.

Luckily one of the Blackberry users had jump leads (they think of everything) and with lots of engine revving (and finding that the battery on a Volvo is in the back and there is a jump start bit on the front) we finally got the Passat started.

    Conclusions:
    1. iPhone batteries are rubbish (but we know that)
    2. Don’t leave the ignition on for hours on end
    3. If anyone wants to steal a car go to a campsite and look for an iPhone user as they leave the keys in the ignition for hours on end.
    4. Volvo batteries are in the boot but there is a red positive jump start point under the bonnet – use anywhere with a good earth for the negative lead.
    5. You need to rev the other car a lot to start your car.
    6. Forget pushing and jump starting your car as the handbrake button doesn’t release with no power.
    7. Camp with friends for abuse and a piggyback jump start.

Unfortunate story matey. Same thing kind of happened to me. I was at a boot sale and I was charging my phone. Unfortunately I feel asleep. (I just drive the car to the boot sale and sit out the way). I also had the radio on as well. We packed everything up and the position we had been in was right in the corner as we were first in, so we had to wait for every one to leave. 1 hr later, everyone gone, lets go. Ignition on, push key in, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK. A horrible sound, like being fired at by paper clips. Battery totally flat, can't disengage the handbrake. Phoned the AA, being a Sunday and being that I was in the middle of nowhere I had to wait an hour. Got it started, he recommended that I leave the car idling for around 30mins before driving cause if I had stalled it wouldn't start again. All is well then I thought, I have 30miles left of diesel to get me nearly 35miles to the nearest petrol station, and I have to leave my car running for 30mins. lol. I know that I would never have stalled the car, but you know that way were it would probably happen and then I would be stuck on a country lane rather than in a field. I made it in the end.

I've had problems with the Iphone, If its in its cradle and I start the car It Buggers up the phone and only a reset will unfreeze the phone.

Its a pain having to remember to start the car before I insert the phone

Also I agree the the battery life is rubbish, also when its not getting electrical / reception help from the car its reception is very poor. I've changed to a Brackberry as I found the Iphone useless as a buisiness tool, mainly due to it inability to get / keep a signal on the move. and the battery unable to last the day

    Cheers JSH
