For anyone who didn't already know, the rev limiter kicks in a 5,000rpm.

Been driving our old slow-revving MG for the past fortnight, but in the Passat today I overtook a slow moving lorry, in second, and quickly hit the rev limiter (I'd forgotten how quickly it revs out). At first I didn't realise what it was (sounded like an F1 car going down the pit lane) and wondered if I'd gone into limp mode, so I left it in gear till I was past - bit worrying with a bend coming up.

I would imagine the car behind disappeared in a cloud of black smoke....

I'm sure the F1 guys wouldn't agree with you Quatrelle. I'm off to Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend and if any of them sound like a Passat TDI hitting the rev limiter I'll be very disapointed .

My Common Rail red lines at 5000rpm, only been there once to try it, and I won't bother again.

Well I did say 'when they're going down the pit lane'....

One thing's for sure - If it happens when you're overtaking it guarantees a large botty part
