I have an A6 2.5tdi 52 plate, purchased 2 and a half years ago with 110k, when i first purchased fuel wasnt too bad, maybe 500 miles from the tank for £60, now it costs £90 to fill up and I get about 450miles, im sure. Well i drive 300 miles per week all motorway and that costs me £60. On top of that my personal driving so its getting expensive to run and makes me wanna sell. Well i was going to but i changed my mind, but someone mentioned maybe i can do something to the car to improve fueld efficiency? or maybe something in the engine possible is wrong causing more fuel to be consumed? is there anything that can be replaced? that might improve fuel economy and what are the likely costs. I can do simple jobs myself (so i say)

My insurance is a fortune too £1400 this year (in interest) 4 yrs ncb and 9 yrs driving exp. was named driver prior to that so didnt buildup ncb, but clean licence, i use a broker and i shopped around too but this was still the cheapest.

This is why i was thinking of selling and getting a 1.9tdi mk5 golf 130bhp which will save me approx £100 per mont on insurance & fuel combines i think. Went to london -manchester last w/e with a friend in his mk5 golf 2010, £60 to fill up and still had quater tank left after flooring it back. hence

What does that work out at in terms of MPG?

My Allroad (similar enging and more weight) does between 28 and 35 depending on my mood and the type of road. If you're not particularly lead-footed, you should be somewhere between these figures.

Sounds like there's more to be saved by massaging the insurance premium down. Have you tried the comparison sites where you can play tunes with the options and see in real time what effect it has on the premium? It's well worth trying to keep you mileage down, maybe storing the car at a different address ( if it's a lower risk area ) and don't use it for commuting...that reduces it by a lot.

Maybe a higher excess is worth the risk if you don't plan on crashing in the near future...

If it's a Tiptronic, check that it changes up early on a light throttle, if it holds on to the gears all the time, you'll get through way more juice...

May I ask the OP how old he is. £1400 is a crazy number. Not have commuting implies you are not insured to drive to and from a regular place of work. This may only come to light if you have an accident/insurance claim or you are stopped by the police. There have been a lot of people pilled around here whilst deivering take away food and hed the cars seized as they do not have business insurance. Regards Peter

37 at next birthday, have been told its got to do with my postcode area, Im not particularly lead footed at all, only sometimes when you get idiots, but more than often i relax at 70, i dont know what the MPG is other that in money terms i got so many miles, i fill up £60 a week and it gets me to work & back 300 miles per week, red lined. I have a manual and dont want to part with it but really feel like selling up due to the cost of fuel & insurance

ok, heres how ive worked it out using my fuel reciept. I paid £30.30 @ 137.9 p/l for 21.97 litres of diesel. So 21.97 divided by (1 gallon) 4.456 = 4.83 gallons in the tank. This has given 137 miles so far and the computer claims i have another 85 miles so thats 223 in total, divided by 4.83 = 46MPG. OK officially i should be getting 52mmpg i think but a small proportion of my mileage is consumed locally. Also when the trip computer states 0 miles in tank i often push another 25 miles out of it which would average 51.75. So mayne im not doing to bad, maybe it is the rising cost of fuel thats my problem

I can sympathize mate direct line quoted me over 1300 quid but with the same details i went to sky insurance after seeing it on this site and with club discount it came down to £335 with probably the best cover I've ever had and the lowest excess

Just tried sjy insurance, they couldnt beat my current insurer due to my postcode area, lancashire, being expensive, they suggested chris knott or adrian flux, again both were unable to compete.
