After some searching, I found a GTD grille on eBay. It's not genuine VW so was much much cheaper but it looks identical and fits well. I got a reduced price GTD badge from VW because one of the the tangs on the back was missing but that wasn't a problem because it was under where the D was so would've been removed anyway. Off came the D and I carefully cut and shaped the backing plate. I fixed to the grille with some thin double sided foam and a small screw to be safe and here is the result.

When I was reading your post on my phone I was thinking it would look far too much like you trying to look like a GTD, however now I've seen the picture I think it looks fantastic. It makes it look unique and doesn't look like you are trying to make the car something its not.
    Brilliant

Thanks for your comments. When planning this, I was conscious of not making it looking odd, for example, by just sticking a GT badge on the standard grille and going by what you say, hopefully I've managed to achieve that. I've compared the front of mine to a GTD and they do look different, as the latter has the deeper front spoiler and different fog lights. It may not be to everyone's liking but I like to think I have given it a unique look, and something that VW could and should've done to make the GT, which at the time was top of the range, stand apart from the S and SE models.

No offence meant, honestly - I meant if not done properly it can look odd. I'm sure yours looks good too.

No worries, I was only pulling your leg. If I was keeping the car I would probably look to do something like yourself as it looks a lot smarter.
