Since the haynes manual for this model is not out yet can anybody tell me if the process for cambelt change is any different of the previous model (I have the manual for the model) with the 1.9 TDI (apart from the engine being transverse).
I am an able home mechanic but have not changed a cambelt for a number of years. Is there anything special about this model? I have had some horrendous quotes from £290+VAT using non original parts (bot too bad) to £498 inc VAT using VW parts. None of the quotes were from dealerships, didn't bother with them. The parts from Euro Car parts for a Continental CamKit is a lot less (vary up to £160ish for the most expensive but not sure which applies to my car). This would be a lot cheaper and I am willing to spend a good day completing the job knowing that I have used proper materials. I aim to keep the car for a number of years. Can any one help? Car is 4years old and is coming up to 80,000 miles. I think it will be a good idea while I there to change the Aux belt and water pump (to one with a metal impeller) too.

The fact that it is a twin cam makes it a bit different. If you send me an email address I'll send you some details.

A VW dealer should be around £350 for belt and pump, add about £30 for aux belts, you only pay for the parts with these not labour, cos there isn't any additional work involved, the GSF and Euro Part's kits are good quality, better than OEM in some cases, the bonus of letting VW do it, is you get the stamp and it makes the car better to sell on, as I found out recently with my Skoda, I had VW do mine, £420 all in, and it's more involved on the Superb as it requires the front to be pulled forwards, an Indy should be quoting you around £250 to do it tbh.

DSG4ME. Appreciate your comments and advice. The dealer stamp would be useful and perhaps more so than a non specialist indy. I may well contact the local dealership for a peice of mind quote anyway but at the moment I am considering keeping the car and undertaking home servicing with good quality branded parts usually from Euro Car parts and a decent brand of VW spec compliant oil. I have missed a warranty (2nd hand indy dealership cheap (worthless) insurance policy required service but completed this myself according to the schedule + more. Therefore i have probably taken the hit on resale benefit of stamped service schedule. I have completed the service booklet instead.

    Hi Gerry T..
there is a main Vw dealer in newport not far from Bristol approx 8 miles from the seven bridge tolls. They charge £299 inc vat or £320 with water pump..
and as quoted above comes with a two year warranty with your book stamped.
Save getting your hands dirty mate..

    Gerry

I recently had the same task, hadn't changed a belt in years never mind a DOHC.
First thing is to buy a locking kit, about £20 from E-Bay if I remember, then get the belt and change the water pump at the same time, personally I got them from VW for about £150 all in, stopped using Euro years age due to poor fitting pattern parts.
Couple of problems I encountered were that I couldn't get the engine mount bracket to come out due to the clearance so had to manouvere the old belt and new belt round about this.
Also the first time I checked the timing the auto tensioner adjuster indicator was not pointing where it should so i had to slacken everything off again until i was happy with it. Remember to slacken the 3 bolts off that hold the cam gears when loading the tensioner (keep the locking pins in during this bit) otherwise the timing will be in the wrong position.
All in took me about 7 hours start to finish, would have been a couple of hours quicker if I had to do it again, spent half my time trying to find tools in my brothers garage to complete the job.

I fully understand that Gerry, if it's any good to you, the GSF parts bin has been good quality to me for the last 3 yrs, I service myself, cos I like to know it's been done, and I can fully service a car for 1/3 of what the dealer charges, an Indy belt change stamp is probably just as good, it's just something official to say it's been done.
