    Maplin 5 in 1 Jumpstarter with Digital Air Compressor @ £50

    Two USB ports
    Two cig-lighter sockets
    Useful for checking/correcting cold tyre pressures
    Always handy to have a jump box
    The leads don't look like the skinny sort that wont even jump a moped.

    Worth a punt or crock of crap?

    Other options;

    Heavy Duty 5 in 1 @ £60

    Heavy-Duty 7-in-1 Solar Jump Starter @ £70

    I had the misfortune of having to jumpstart a car using a set of leads which had snapped - plastic hinged clamps - trying to hold the clamps onto the battery posts and start the car with two people was a royal PITA.

    Which of the two you quoted would you go for?

    Something has gone wrong in the way my quote of your post has gone....

    The heavy duty ones look like they have good clamps on, but the cheaper one you cannot see the clamps hence my comments before

    I'd go for the one with the best clamps personally as they should at least last

    I've sent a question thing to Maplin to ask about the hinges.

    Will report back if/when they reply.

    I used to sell these (not this make). They are fine for DIY type use. The battery won't last because it is cheap and Chinese. The compressor won't last if you leave it on too long. The cables may be too short and the clamps poorly made. The pressure guages are inaccurate and unreliable. Given all that. If you want something that is handy in an emergency, they are fine. The solar ones are too bulky but good if you have a caravan. You leave it in the sun so it's always ready to go. You really do need to look at one though. Sometimes the leads are so short, it is almost impossible to get them onto a battery.

    If it's too good to be true....

    I'll call in to a Maplin if I get a chance - thanks for the warning.
