Not an expert, but there's the usual checks for things like coloured smoke out the exhaust (if it's humid there will be a lot of visible water vapour, but this is fine), check for mustard around oil cap. Ie basically that the oil system is sealed and working fine.

ABS control unit is a common failure, or one of the sensors associated with it at least - first check that the ESP warning light hasn't been bypassed to disguise the problem by turning the ESP off - an amber warning light should show in the dash. Once you've checked that's working then any problems will become apparent on a spirited test drive - when mine was on it's way out the traction control and ESP would cut in overly aggressively, especially exiting roundabouts. Since getting it fixed the TC is unnoticeable to this average driver - it just seems to stick to the road.

Problem is the sensor can go at any time really - honestjohn basically recommend haggling 1.5k off the price by default as that's the cost of replacement. I also bought an extended warranty that covered it.
