I have a 2006 A4 Tdi Multitronic with 62k miles. It was making a loud knocking noise when starting. This has been diagnosed by the main dealer as failed DMF flywheel, bill will be around £1200. Is this a common failure item? as I thought that only manuals had DMF flywheels.
The car is 8 months out of warranty, are Audi likely to pay for this?
The car was bought new from the dealer the car is at and all services have been done by them.

    Thanks for any information.

    John.

The Multichronic does have a DMF but failure isn’t very common. I would ask for some contribution under good will.

I had the problem of heavy vibration whilst idling and it was the DMF. Mine is an 05 1.9TDI and a th time had around 40k on the clock. Out of warranty but managed to get a discount on parts after forcing the issue after being quoted the same sort of figure. They also changed the clutch while they were at it, as it's common to do that whilst replacing th flywheel.

Sorry it's not better news, I was gutted when I was told! Hope they're wring and it isn't th flywheel!

    Cheers.

multi flywheels are very common and easy to diagnose as they rattle there nuts off from cranking.
Replaced loads of these, if you have a full dealer service history then you may receive 100% parts goodwill and the dealer may reduce the labour rate but audi uk stand the part not the dealer and the dealer has the right to alter the labour rate if they see fit.
Each case is treated on its merits and a dealer history is very important
If you have no dealer history then you are on your own with no contribution.
Also pay a contribution so you keep the warranty on the parts replaced

Thank you all for your replies. The price was reduced to just over £600, around 50%. I still believe that this should not fail so soon.

A lot of you guys are saying in ref to the flywheel that is is very noisy on start up, mine is but only gives a quick rattle, then is smooth. My issue is once i start driving the car starts to judder, this gets gradually worse until you have to pull over because you lose all drive, you just coast. Once you leave the car for 5 mins, you can start to drive again but it don't take long before it stops again. I had to drive 10 miles home and had to stop 4 times. Is this still likely to be the flywheel because once started, i can rev the engine and it sounds smooth. Can it be injectors, a check around a month ago showed a speed sensor issue, could it be this. I don't mind changing the flywheel but would hate to go to that cost and then still have an issue.

The Multichronic is not an automatic per se, it is a Continuously Variable Transmission. The DSG is also often referred to as an automatic but it isn't, it is an automated manual and the Multitronic and the DSG both use a Dual Mass Flywheel.
