    Hi all,

I am brand new to the forum and am asking for advice really.

I am interested in this car: A6 2.5 tdi (03) with a shade over 100k and full VAG SH. The dealer is asking £6.5k for it but i have just checked with my insurer and they value it at about £5.8k so for me, there is room to negotiate off dealer asking price.

    I guess my questions are:

Is it worth the money and is it worth a look at this price?

Also, anything that i should be aware of?

    Thanks guys,
    Neil

You could buy my 98 2.8 manual quattro with 94k for £2000 It does about the same mpg from what I've read here....

I'm thinking about selling it as it looks like I'll be heading abroad to work for a while...

Does it tick your boxes on what you want from the car?
Also does it have the extras you are looking for ie Leather interior, cruise control etc?

Small note I love ESS, had 2 myself but the eldedest one died just over a month a go 12 years of age but thought he was a pup.

1st Welcome to the forum, I can not give advice as to if it is worth the money, that is your call, but I can tell you some bad points about the 2.5 V6, but not to put you off, just to make you aware...

I believe only the early ones can suffer worn cam shafts, longlife servicing doesn't help this.
check when timing belt was done, and if due again, budget for this including a water pump and thermostat, especially the thermostat which is a common failure on these, but a huge strip down to change on its own.

there are few with stories of large repair bills for a new fuel pump.

I have a 2000, 2.5 AKN Allroad Quatro, I've had to change the thermostat but other than that great engine, loads of pull. I get max 34MPG, I do worry if I will have camshaft wear but I change the oil regularly which I hope keeps it running fine, sometimes you read of horror repair bills but if it was not the engine it would be some other part needing fixed anyway!!

    regards

    Andy

Have you checked Autotrader for comparative nationwide prices?

Nice engines to drive, but if you're going to do alot of mileage, then it could prove expensive to maintain and run. If the full VAG servicing has been done on schedule, then you know the car will have been well looked after, in terms of oil changes and correct grade.

The 2.5 units are very strong. However some of them suffer from worn camshafts, which ends up costing a couple of thousand to put right properly (not an overly common issue). A search of this forum should unearth previous posts where this has been a problem. Rest of the car is usually reliable, with common areas for wear being the front suspension links - but these are not too expensive to rectify.

Hi Neal. I can reccomend the A6 Avante, it really is a great car. I have a A6 Avante 1.9 TDi - 130 bhp, 6 speed manual. Currently sitting in my garage, with 86k miles and lots of service history (with receipts). I am considering putting it up for sale, if you were interested, as an alternative to the 2.5 TDi. I would want about £5k for the car.

They're great motor's if a little agricultural sounding on tickover, however, they sound lovely for a diesel when driving normally.

That sort of money seems a little rich (imo) .. HOWEVER! (this is just my opinion)

    brake discs / pads
    tyres (all 4)
    long mot / a few months tax (that's £400 a year!)
    proof of cambelt change
a DIS unit that isn't corrupt or faded/missing pixels.

would be what i'd want to be all damned good if not perfect for that sort of money, naturally, if the car ticks the boxes you want out of it, has the specification you want and ultimately drives nicely then i'd haggle a bit and be happy to pay whatever you're happy to pay.

a client of mine bought a 2.5v6 tdi 180bhp sport, lovely motor all round - although I would have been a lot less inclined to buy because of the 'wood' trim pack - or haggled the price some more so i could change it. But client = happy as it's got everything he wanted, even down to the wood trim.

Oh, if it's the 6spd box, I understand they can be a bit iffy compared to the 5spd, but VAG S/H should illustrate a lot.

    good luck
    jt
