Start and stop issues

hey guys needing some advise on my mk4 golf 150pd ARL

Started the car this morning, the car read out 9 degree's so it was not cold but the car struggled to start, there was a loud noise coming from the back off side of the car, over the the fuel tank, im guessing that is the fuel pump? it went on for about 2-3 min, like a loud creaking sound?
im guessing it needs replacing but is there anything else i should be looking at?

When turning off the engine the voilently shakes before it cuts out, it shook the whole car, just to make sure it was not a one off i started the car again, ran for a min or so and stopped it again, same happened.
it would be the kind of behaviour youd expect if you had a major misfire, the engine throwing its weight about but only for a split second before the cuts out

The shaking is probably the anti shudder flap not working. A vag-com read will tell you. You could try checking the vacuum pipes round the engine first.
