vw bora diesel fuel filter change?

the car is a vw bora-1.9tdi with a pd engine,2004 model with 76,455 miles on the clock.

how easy is it to change the diesel fuel filter which is located in the engine compartment?

is it just a straightforward opening the hose clips at the top and to loosen the fuel filter housing bracket.

will there be much diesel spillage during the above?

is it a high pressure system or low pressure one?

would it be worth draining the diesel in the filter using the plastic bleed screw in the bottom first?

once the new filter is assembled ,does one have to spin the engine a lot before the diesel fuel will fill up in the new filter and hence go to the engine to start it

Fuel filter change on MK 4 is quite simple:-

1. Release hose clips from single hoses ( slide clips further down hoses) and pull hoses off. Wrap absorbant paper towel around hose ends to minimise fuel drops to engine compartment.
2. Remove spring clip from double hose and lift the double hose off ( & control valve) . Leave hoses attached . Hold spring with pliers when removing spring to prevent it flying away.
wrap clean cloth / paper around valve.
3. Prise the black plastic clips away from the filter body ( if fitted).
4. Lift & remove filter.
5. If new filter comes with new 'O' rings replace the rings on the valve.Prime new filter with clean fuel thro' valve aperture.
Wait for fuel to seep thro' filter element and keep topping up untill full.Fit filter in bracket & re-clip.
6. Re-fit hoses
7. Start engine & let it run for a few minutes . It should start right away.

I use a plastic spare fuel container with clean fuel in . I've never used it for the original purpose it was designed for ( spare fuel carrier) . This saves an awful lot of starter/ battery abuse waiting for the fuel to prime.
You can hold filter upright in bench vice or DIY workmate bench or prop it up with blocks of wood or similar ( or get SWMBO to hold it if you're lucky ) whilst you fill it.

so a spare fuel can and a small funnel should do the trick.

do not know what SWMBO is?

is fuel system pressurised as you open clips holding the hoses?

i suppose i could de-pressurise it by draining fuel thru the bleed valve at the base of the filter?

Spare fuel can OK . I manage without funnel

This is the low pressure input side to the injection system so there's no problem with any fuel leaks ( only drips ).
