    Just need some advice
I usually take my car to the local garage for a service and take my own oil
I have been using millers 5w30 longlife II oil as part of the long life service
However ASDA now do a 5 litre Castrol Edge 5w30 for a cheaper price.
Just wandering if that is any good for a longlife service and what everyone view on millers oil is

I think both oils meet the VAG spec 507 so I don't think there's any significant difference between the two.

I use VW's Quantum Platinum fully synthetic oil, It's about £25ish for 5litres.
From past bad experiance (oil way sludging up causing tapet to run dry and explode in the head kackering the cylinder head in my previous 1.9tdi pd 130 audi a4). I would not bother with the longlife oil service because it will kill the engine in the end.

My Audi A4 had full audi service history until when I purchased it, then I had it serviced a a friends garage using all of the genuine audi parts including castrol longlife oil (£75 worth).

The second time I had the oil replaced (using the VAG castrol edge oil purchsed from Halfords after contacting castrol to make sure this oil was correct), I notice that as soon as the new oil went in I checked the dip stick and the new oil was black!!!!!!

As soon as I drove the car from the garage I could hear a faint tapet noise, then over the next 1000 miles the tappet noise got louder and louder until the tapet let go anf killed the top end of my engine!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like that as soon as the new oil went in it dislodged the skudge in my sump and pushed the sludge crap around my enging causing a oil way to block feeding a tappet.

Trust me longlife oil does not keep the engine clean enough, it will in the end kill the engine.

Also I would advise using a engine flush like "Forte" every other oil change to clean the sludge crap out of the sump.

I don't want to scare anyone but I'm trying to stop this from happening to anyone else on this forum.

    Cheers

    Dan

You can't condem long life oil because one owner has had a bad experience with one car whose full history we do not know . Millions of owners use long life oil without any problems . The long life spec oils have been developed between VAG & the leading brand oil companies and have been fully tested and approved . Most fleet cars use this oil & fleet managers are known to be very careful with their companies momey. Fleet cars must do many millions of miles each year , year after year , without any problems.
All diesel lubricating oils turn black very quickly due to the combustion by-products being held in suspension in the lubricating oil.
I've been using long life oils for the past 80.000 miles without any problems and I'm sure that lots of other forum members have had similar experience.

    Hi,

I use Castrol Edge 5W30 in my car on the fixed time and distance regime as it meets the current highest VW507.00 specification.

For the difference in price between semi-synthetic and fully synthetic like the Edge over twelve months is a no brainer in my opinion.

One point to remember though, if you are on Time and Distance and you specify long life oil as part of the service, make sure that they use it because they normally use semi-synthetic.

looks like verdict is out on this one, to be fair I have been using millers long life oil on my golf for all its services and the only problem I have had is the turbo going, that was at 114,000 miles.
The only reason why I put up the post is that I was in ASDA and they were selling the castrol edge 5w30 5 litres at £30, but I wasn't sure if it was upto spec for the long life service

One thing I forgot to put in my original reply is that I replace my oil every 5-6k miles.

After all the more oil changes you can do the better it is for the longlife of the engine.

Anyone who is doing the longlife oil servicing I would suggest that they should start to save up for the rebuild now because when you are out of your 3year 100K warranty VW-Audi will not want to know!!!!!!!!!!

Oh a message to vwcabriolet1971 please read my original reply as in there I clearly stated this:

My Audi A4 had full audi service history until when I purchased it, then I had it serviced at a friends garage using all of the genuine audi parts including castrol longlife oil (£75 worth).

If you think I am wrong, I suggest that you contact “Crasher” and ask him how many miles you should leave oil in the engine for.

Like I said before I am trying to stop this problem happening to another forum member however if people wish to ignore my advice that is up to the individual but I do not want to be criticised for giving it.
