2017 Golf 2.0 diesel R Design.
Car has come up with warning tonight saying battery not charging. First signs were air con not running properly and slightly juddery steering wheel feel when parking. Car is three and a half years older with 35k on the clock and has never had any problems whatsoever. We have put it in charge just now but my son is due to take his driving test in it at 11am tomorrow.
Is this likely to be an alternator issue or just needing a new battery? Thanks for any suggestions.

I would start with a new battery, often AGM stop/start batteries start failing at four years... apparently that is progress

I certainly would try a battery, four years is nothing unusual with VAG OE AGM batteries. I had to change the two leisure batterie's in a California last week as they would not hold charge and only 5 years old.
