Ok I shall buy the appropriate sealants for the jobs and try again and see what happens.
Fingers crossed that sorts it out.
D 176 501 A1 silicon sealant only for position 8" which is the chain cover gasket and the sump sealant as D 176 600 M1 which is Elring 036.164
Here is a picture of where the leak is coming from.
I didn’t use studs to guide the sump on so suspecting I have moved the sealant when I installed it.

it’s only in one localised area.....front right hand corner / drive belt side.
hopefully the picture should help.
My suspicion there is the metal/rubber gasket is leaking from the oil pump delivery gallery, did you use new bolts and gasket?
I used a new gasket but the bolts weren’t new.
Do you reckon new bolts would solve the issue?
Or does it need stripping down again? And replacing the gasket, bolts and sealants?
Will need quite a lot of new bolts.

So is it leaking from this part of the gasket? Lower right hand corner?

The section above, the oil comes up the drilling in the block and comes out of the lower port into the cover which is a manifold created by the casting of the cover and the gasket; then it follows up to the oil filter and then back down the other side of the gasket via another manifold created by the block casting and the other side of the gasket, then back into the block. On the CAVD I had nightmares with I studied the oil delivery system in minute detail and came to the conclusion that whoever designed it was on drugs... If you re-use the bolts they can "waist" under pressure. Mind you, all my obsessive attention to detail still left me with a CAVD that sound like a skeleton masturbating in a biscuit tin!
Thanks for the detailed explanation. So going forward what is best course of action to remedy the leak?
Replace gasket, bolts and renew sealant?
Bit of pain if so as I had all the time in the world and access when the engine was out and I did take my time with it all and was as thorough as I could be.
You reckon the bolts have as you’ve said above “waist” under the pressure? What does that mean exactly? Didn’t think they were stretch bolts but maybe they are?
In a very exaggerated form

This happens under tension but no they are not torque to yield but it can happen, thinking about it, did you fit new O rings, item 17?

Yes they were new when I took the chain cover off the last time.... but didn’t replace them this time. They are cheap so may as well replace them again.......
there is one bolt that didn’t torque down properly which I think was one of the ones that goes through one of these....
think it may have stripped the thread.....
could this also be the cause if the bolt doesn’t torque down and seal properly??
if it doesn’t retap can I go a size above? Think they are normally M6 fixings (think it’s the 45mm length bolt not the 22mm ones?)
otherwise that’s a new block!
