New to forum with major issue
I am new to this for so a quick hello first!
I have had my 2006 2.0tdi estate since last April. I bought it with 115000 miles on it and it now has 130000 miles on it.
My car died this morning on the way to the dealer!
Coming down the motorway all seemed well when it just suddenly lost all power then stalled. No power steering or anything. Rolled onto the snow covered hard shoulder, tried to restart and it failed. Called recovery and they were able to take me to the dealer. The ironic thing is that I was on my way to the dealer anyway to get serviced!
They recon it will be either the fuel pump or the injectors. On top of that the park brake is broken, the back door won't open and they just rang to say they have broken the back rest on my driver seat. Crapy day all round then!
There was a link on the other forum I was on to this one about other people that had similar issues butt can't get it to work and can't seem to find it.
Please help before the dealer rips me off!!
Re: New to forum with major issue
Ask them to do a scan and give you the results. If you post the results on here people may be able to give you advice. Many things can cause a sudden cut out like you had.
Re: New to forum with major issue
Sounds like an expensive time at the dealer - did you try the old battery disconnect trick?
Re: New to forum with major issue
When I tried to restart there was no diesel goin to the engine. Was just ticking over but not starting. However, after it had stalled there was no error on the dash to say anything was wrong
Re: New to forum with major issue
Some electrical faults and mechanical faults don't show on the dash that's why you need a code read.

seems odd that the garage have gone for 2 of the most expensive causes.
I can't see all injectors giving up at exactly the same time, I'd question that cause of failure. Likewise for the fuel pump, surely some stuttering would be experienced before cut-out.
Looking at your mileage and age of car, I'm leaning more towards a possible cambelt failure. Were any noises heard prior to the engine failure? Was there any excess oil residue anywhere? Did you notice any smoke?
Re: New to forum with major issue
If no diesel's getting to the car, then that could be a pump failure - do you know if it's had the recall done?
And it doesn't seem odd that the garage has gone for the big money - sounds like shameless opportunism...
Re: New to forum with major issue
Tandem pump replacement isnt that much of an expensive job. Nor is an injector fault.
Its not like they are saying the engine needs replacing!
Let us know what they think you need done........

would you like to define your idea of expensive? I've yet to come across a 'cheap' injector replacement?

VW will not offer me any "good will" discount on the car cause of it's mileage. They also said they don't get codes, just the explanation of what was wrong. They've also told me it needs new pads on the front and a software update for the park brake switch. It's a very expensive day for me!
Re: New to forum with major issue
One of the injectors has failed. Cost for new part £500+ labour.
There was no sign there was anything wrong. Was running perfectly. I look after the car well cause of the mileage it has.
They said because one injected failed the rest will automatically stop workin until the bad one is fixed.
Also, belt was changed at 80k and the fuel pump recall done about 30k.
Re: New to forum with major issue
In theory the car will still run if one injector fails but the ecu makes a decision about this and can cut fueling to prevent damage to the engine. The garage should have given you the printout from their diagnostic machine so that you could put the details on here.
Re: New to forum with major issue
I've had a coil pack go on my 1.2 polo before and it let me drive with just 2 cylinders. Shock and vibrated like mad and only drove it 2 miles to the garage.
The said they will give me the print outs tomorrow when I pick the car up. As soon as I get the info I'll post it up.
Only worry I have is that there was no warning of what was about to happen. How do I know another injector isn't about to go? Does anyone what makes them fail or anythin I can do to make them last longer?
Re: New to forum with major issue
Nothing you can do to make injectors last. It's down to luck and remembering not to put petrol in the tank.
Re: New to forum with major issue
Do any of those Diesel mixers make any difference? The stuff you can add to your fuel mix to "clean" the injectors and make them work more efficiently?
Would just like to say after just one day on this forum ive had more help than any of the other forums I've posted on. Thanks!

Every car that's ever gone in for anything at all, ever, needs new pads on the front.

Nooo - mine's just had a 32,000kms service, no probs.;)
Interestingly, what they did do (the car's 3 years old now) was test the brake fluid for contamination. Do they do that in the UK?
Re: New to forum with major issue
It's normal to test brake fluid for water content as its hygroscopic (if that's the right word)

My question was prompted by mycarsavw's cynical comment about dealers and "needs new pads" every time.
I really was pleasantly surprised that mine didn't just change the fluid after three years.

Re: New to forum with major issue
So from above, it was 50quid to remove the door card and reconnect the door release cable and 24quid to fit a new bolt to the rear light to hold it in place.
They also charged me for pushing the car 20yards into the garage from the road.
