alarm battery/horn
Can anyone tell me where the alarm system (more specifically the battery unit) is. Maybe even a description of what it looks like. I have just ripped out the trim in the boot looking for it to replace the battery and can only find the vacuum pump for the central locking. A bunch of diagrams would be v useful. Cheers Paddy

If it's not in the boot then it's probably under the battery.
Or you could set it off and chase it down.... :-))

Sorry should've put more info in. The alarm horn was definately in the rear drivers side area (I tracked it earlier when it was going off repeatedly) when I took the car to a mechanic he said there was nothing he could do except disconnect the horn, since then and after a lot of searching i have diagnosed a possible discharged alarm battery/faulty horn. just need an exact position. Cheers anyway

Hi, The horn/battery is on the vary rear right hand side behind
the rear side panel. Its right down in the well bit, fastened in with a screw on a bracket. its quite hard to see , but its the only thing in there.(it's basically a little siren) Did you say you got a replacement? My started acting up, thats basically why i know where it is.(just disconnected it)
Hope this helps, Steve

No mate not yet wanted to see how to get it off and then go to a scrappy they are about 80 quid I hear. Still cant see it, what shape /colour is it and where is it in relation to the vacuum pump?
Cheers paddy

IT'S ABOUT 4 X 3" (BLACK) iF YOU TAKE OUT THE TRIANGULAR HOLDER THING.. REMOVE ALL THE BLACK CLIPS AND PULL THE OSR PANEL FORWARD OR TOTALLY OUT, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE SPONGE IN THE WELL. CAN'T REMEMBER IF YOU NEED TO MOVE THIS. BUT THE SIREN IS DOWN THERE, NO TOO EASY TO SEE, THERE SHOULD BE A 10MM BOLT HOLDING A GOLD BRACKET WITH THE SIREN ON. PROBABLY BEST TO FOLLOW ANY WIRES IN THAT AREA AND SEE WHERE THEY LEAD TOO, ONE WILL BE THE ONE YOUR AFTER. AGAIN ITS NOT REALLY OBVIOUS BUT THERES NOT MUCH ELSE DOWN THERE...NOT SURE ABOUT THE PUMP, CAN'T REMEMBER SEEING THAT...SORRY

Really sorry what triangular thing, do you mean the carpeted stowage on the RH side as you look into the boot, I removed that, underneath is a foam covered vacuum pump. I have lifted that out and there is nothing else down there. I am looking just under the light cluster is it further forward?
-
yeah, i'm sure its a bit further forward, it sits about floor level, under the lip that you can see, i'm sure its not viable to the eye. run your hand from the back to the front under teh seam/lip area. you should be able to feel it.
-
This is beginning to drive me mad now just got in my boot in the dark and still cant find it. At floor level ran my hand from the back under the lights right the way along to the wheel arch. still cant see it. I must be going blind or stupid.
-
you need to be running you hand from the lights towards the front of the car, i.e the spare wheel side. if you're on the wheel arch you on the opposite side to what you need to be. its the side nearer you.

Thanks for you help so far its very much appreciated. But no luck yet still cant find it think I'm in the right place however when the problem first showed itself a couple of years back I got an auto electrician to disconnect the horn. Im now beginning to think he actaull removed the whole unit instead of cutting the cables. I will kick his **** when I see him again if he has. I'm gonna take a run to the scrappies near me and have a look in the back of some of the write offs and see if I can find it on them.
Thanks again for your help in this frustrating ordeal. :beerchug:

Got Some Pictures For You If You Can Forward Your Email. As You Say I Reckon It's Been Removed Or You Would Have Found It By Now. Right Near The Back Of The Seam You Should See 2 Gold Lugs (approx 10mm In Size)with A 10mm Bolt In Between (viewed From Above), If All You Can See Is A Hole Then The Alarm Has Been Removed. Where You Can See The Pump Wiring You Should Also Find The Loom Wire For The Alarm With A Connector On It. Wouldn't Have Thought Anyone Woukld Cut That Off As Its Far Easier To Just Diconnect It. Again If Its Hanging You Know The Alarms Gone.

Pennies drop
The penny drops, I have spent 3 hours in a scrappy today looking for the elusive alarm battery i have heard so much about. Well I never... on a '95 ADR engined version the horn is on the NS rear bulkhead behind the trim and there is not a battery fitted. (Just a silver horn cannister not a black 4 x 3" sealed unit) I then checked out a few newer versions of my car up until an S reg and still no battery unit. However did check out a couple of new passats and they do have a the unit often described in this and many other forums. Anyway to cut a long story short have recoonected a new alarm horn and I am awaiting to see if I get filled in by the neighbours tonight and then a few more hours trying to track down the fault. So updates probably to follow. Thanks to you all for the advice so far.
