Both the 1.9 and 2.0 are pretty reliable and proven engines now, and dont usually suffer from and major problems such as the turbo issues BMW 2.0 diesels sometimes have. The 1.9 is significantly more economical than the 2.0 (which I have), but I have no real complaints about my engine other than externally noisy tickover compared to newer common rail diesels. Both engines are puchy though which most people enjoy compared to the 'flatter' response of common rail engines.
The 1.9 is far more reliable than the 2.0
Avoid dpf filters and multitronic.
There have been to meny issues with the 2.0 pump diesel and it should have been replaced with common rail ages ago.
If you have full warranty its fine but if not go for the trusted 1.9 version.
My opininon and only based on the workshop visits comparison of the 1.9 and 2.0 so dont let me put you off but the early 2.0 seemed more fault free to the late end of line b7 2.0
I have driven the 1.9TDI 115ps and 2.0TDI 140 and 170ps.
If you want a sporty drive go for the 2.0TDI 170ps.
I have had the 1.9TDI in my Avant for 3 years and it is brilliant if a little noisy but I get easily 600 miles out of a tank every time with a mix of driving and sometimes more and it's only a shade slower than the 2.0TDI 140ps
If you are going for petrol get the 2.0T like I just have, it's brilliant (but not on TAX tut tut )
600 miles out of the 1.9, sheesh you must like getting everywhere in a hurry??
I easily get 700 miles from my 2.0 140, and now its chipped am looking at the thick end of 750 easily, and i've had 800 once!!!
And before you ask, no I don't drive like a granny, thats driving at 80 (eerr.... I mean 70 officer ;) ) on the dual carriageway and 60-70 on the A roads!!
Paul :biglaugh:
Yeah I did drive it a bit fast everywhere (when I could).
I never really got the tank that empty it was always on 600 miles with still some juice left but probably good for more miles.
Is it easy/expensive to get the car chipped? Wouldn't mind doing it to my new petrol Avant if it improves the fuel economy/performance.
Thanks for answers,
so it seems the 1.9 engine is the best choice in terms of reliability and economy.
a8_tech: you advice to avoid multitronic - is it buggy ? What about tiptronic, my friend has it in VW, not sure if you can find them in audis ?
Lot of you guys talk abou chipping here. Is it about changing software/firmware in the computer ? Is it safe (I suppose you loose warranty ...) ?
Especially the early 6 disc Multitronics are notorious for breaking at very low mileage. There's alot of discussion about Multitronic problems over in the B6 forum.
As for the Tiptronic, if you do decide to get one make sure it has been serviced if the car has enough mileage on it. The oil change interval is usually around 40k miles, though it seems different dealers will give you different info about it. Some say the oil doesn't need to be changed at all! Also, when you test drive the car and notice anything unusual about the gearbox. Even the slightest sign of slipping, jerking, etc is a sign you should walk away from it.
I've got a 56 plate 2.7Tdi Avant in boring, sorry, Dolphin Grey. I've had it re-mapped (aka chipped) and on a trip to Manchester earlier this week (80 miles) I got 52mpg, doing 75mph in 6th using c/control. I was v pleased to say the least. The 2.7 is chain cam so no snapping belt to worry about. It's also quiet, and not as rattly as the 2.0Tdi. Fuel economy is not scary at all (any worse than the 2.0Tdi?) and oh yes, it goes like stink:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:. Mid range torque is v. impressive and it can outpace most cars through the gears.
2.7 and 3.0 tdi are rare but solid and i have never replaced a single engine but 2.0 tdi i have lost count.
I have to say, for all the problems experienced with 2.0 tdi engines, my 2.0 tdi (170 quattro sline SE) has not put a foot wrong. 16k so far and only a bottle of oil, but starting to get that worrying feeling from all the issues regarding reliability of the engine and mpg worries. I get 42 mpg (on the readout, so probably make that 39mpg - but improving with mileage), but with a daily commute thats 20 mins motorway and 40 minutes sat in London traffic, I really cannot complain. Very heavy right foot after sitting in traffic to add. Test drove 1.9 tdi and 2.0 tdi (both 140 and 170) and went for broke with the 170bhp. Hated it at first (coming from a 4.2 V8), but as the miles piled on, it loosened up and perfprmance and mpg improved, or maybe I just got used it??? Hey A8, what are the common faults of the 2.0tdi engine?
Mainly software issues ie egr settings and fueling plus the dreaded dpf filter.
running faults but there have been a few engine failures.
A8. Noticed you said you have changed engines on the 2.0TDI. What faults and were they high milage.
I haved moved from VW 1.9TDI PD engine in a Bora which was a very good motor over the 40K I had it never missed a beat and returned around 50+ MPG overall.
I assumed the Audi 1.9TDI is not a PD engine and thought with the extra weight would go for the 2.0 TDI. Was that a wrong choice (in your opinion)
Driven to scotland and back and got around 53 MPG, but that was really easy going (70/75ish) all the way. Only done 7500 in it though. The only thing I noticed has been the tickover has gone from around 875 to around 950 (engine loosening up?) during the time I have had it other than that is been pretty OK. Any thought on the tickover?
The 1.9 is pd and very reliable the 2.0 tdi pd unit not as reliable but thats a lot to do with the emmision regs and adapting the engine to meet the citerion which the 1.9 pd didnt have to meet for eu 3.The 1.9 tdi is better for towing etc.The mechanical failures for the 2.0 pd unit are shearing oil pump gear and tandem pump mixing fuel into the oil causing a big bang, that issue hasnt been to frequent anf the oil pump balance shaft pulley is now a recall.I think the 2.0 tdi has suffered with more workhop visits because of software updates and running issues were as the 1.9 just needed routine service and the occasional turbo.
The new 2.0 common rail already has a recall for the egr cooler but it looks like it will bring a return of the vag reliability to the diesel engine as the 3.0 and the 2.7 tdi common rail engines are bullit proof.I think the pd engine was on the market for a little to long but it has been in succesfull with over 40,000 2.0 pd units sold in uk vag platforms my comments against it are petty but i prefer the 1.9 pd unit as a private buyer. The tick over may have been updated at workshop visit for software recall,if its not been in then i couldnt say
Thanks for that. Good to have someone "in the know" at a dealer who is willing to spend time on the forum and share a little knowledge.
Looks like I made the right decision regarding NOT going for the 170 and the DPF unit. (I know of serious issues with other manufacturers and DPF's so that helped make the decision) I assume the Oil Pump drive issues where a little earlier than May '07 models which is what I have.
My only negative thoughts about my 2.0TDI is the lack of pull from rest and at low end and fuel consumption which over 3,000 miles is dead on 50mpg and thats mostly motorway and nothing heavy footed, but I will wait and see what I get a little more milage on it...
