Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Hi guys, I'm experiencing some new issues with my A3 8P, 2009, that I hoping some of you may be able to help me with. The biggie for now is the drivers window not going down. I think it randomly started some time this week. Pressed the window switch to roll down the window and nothing happened, continued through out the week and is currently doing the same. I can roll down/up the passenger side window from the window button switch at the drivers side.
I had an issue with the window regulator on the passenger side not that long ago, but that gave more obvious signs of what caused that issue.
I see people say to check the fuses, but is it a case of if the passenger side window is working it won’t be the fuse as that one should not work too, if it was the fuse?
I’ve been doing some research and people have said to check the wiring between the door, to the car. I tried to pull off the rubber grommet where the wiring harness plugs into the car, but I had difficulty getting the back of it off. I got the 2 front clips out but couldn’t get the back clips out, I’m guessing there will be 2 at the back too? I could stretch the front out a bit to have a peek inside and from what I could see, the wires looked okay. I took the door card just to check the part number of the Window Motor which is 8P0959801K. I saw that sometimes there is a issue with the Door Switch, where the window button are, how would I be able to tell if there is an issue with those?
The other issue is related to the car's central locking, I can lock the car by pressing the key fob. When pressing the key fob to unlock the car. It does the double light flash but I have to use my key in the door to open the drivers door. The passenger side door I have to open from the inside, these issues have been going on for a while, but I’ve lived with them but ideally I could get these sorted out as well. But the main issue Iwant to deal with is getting my drivers window to wind down for when using tickets machines, etc.
I did VCDS scan of my car and had quite a few errors. The ones I believe related to these issues are below.

Every component in driver's door has fault - strong possibility that You have read correctly - look for wiring issue in the loom between the door and car.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Thanks, I'll have another look later. When trying to pull the rubber grommet out I couldn't get the back clips out. Theres not much space, to push clips at the back with fingers.
I tried to take a video of what I could see, here is a screen grab of that. I'm on mobile phone at the moment and don't see an upload option. I'll upload an image when I get to desktop.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
This is what I could see, when pulling the rubber grommet away from the front. Like I mentioned I couldn't seem to get the back clips off, felt like I would break it just pulling it with out pressing the "tabs" at the back? Any tips for getting it fully off? and is this where the issue is likely to be?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
The wires tend to break past where you can see in your pic. The two clips at the back are the same as the front - you do need to get your fingers behind and press them in to remove, it's tricky but doable. Maybe try putting the front back in place, then removing the back clips first might help.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Thanks for the tips, I managed to get it off, doing as you said. At least 3 wires were broken. Not sure if I might have broke one wire further as the key fob is not locking my door afterwards. I can manually lock the door though.
Does this mean I need a wiring loom or repair kit? The broken wires that I could see were the brown one, red and green one, black one, and then a couple of others had little breaks in them

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Called Audi, they said that there's two options it could be after first saying that they don't make them anymore, this was after he said he will check if there were repair wires, so maybe he was talking about those. Refused to give out part numbers for the 2 options that he mentioned.
First option. £197. Connects to the window regulator, switches and mirror. (he said attaches to the door card)
Second option. £197. Attaches to window motor and goes to the car body (mentioned that it has a rubber grommet, that I mentioned when trying to describe where it was, what it looked like)

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I've just spliced in new wire lengths for the broken (and cracked, soon to be broken) wires. A bit fiddly as its not always easy to get enough 'good' wire to splice to in the available space. However, it has worked. On another car I bought a new plug with flying leads from ebay (maybe around £20?). Take the door card off, pull the plug and part of harness through from the inside of the door and then it's relatively easy to splice in every wire before threading back through the door and reconnecting. The proper way would of course be to replace the whole wiring loom (your second option).
-
Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Thanks for the advice.
I managed to change the loom with one I got from ebay today. But I might have to mess with it again tomorrow as it was getting too dark outside. The only issue, I had is the little black clip that goes into the door near the speakers was facing the wrong way, so I couldn't clip it in and the metal clip that slides onto the inside of the door below that area wouldn't clip on.
Originally, After I threaded the cable through the door, I noticed the main plug was upside down, but I could turn it to get it upright. I hope I don't have to take the whole cable out again. I don't want to risk damaging any of the wires on the connector to the car body, as when I took the old one off, I pulled it by the wires as it was getting replaced.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Okay, here's a little update. I got the wire clip on, I put the door card back on, turned on the car and I have nothing working on the drivers side switch(window wind up/ mirror movement) before it was just the drivers side window not moving.
I dug out my laptop with VCDS and it said it had an hour battery left, thought okay I'll probably get a scan, started the scan near the end it cut out but got the initial results without clearing. I have the laptop on charge now, I'll later clear and rescan. Could it be a fuse?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Took the door card back off and made sure the connectors were seated properly. Now only the drivers window works from the door switch. Both the mirrors and passenger side are not responding to presses on the switch controls, they worked prior to swapping the loom. Also the passenger side switch can control the passenger side window up and down.
I need to look for one of those circuit testers I've got stored away some where to try and check the fuses.
Any other suggestions?

Has the eBay loom the same PN as the old loom in the car?

Hi, I used the part number on the original loom to order the current loom. It has the part number on the loom sticker in a slightly different place than the original sticker, but I assume it's the same part.
So it seem the drivers window working, going down/up is intermittent. Tuesday, I think, the drivers window wasn't winding down on the way to work, when leaving work it was working. Yesterday and today it's not winding down.

Here's a few pics of the part numbers. First is the original one. The second one is the new part.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...95aacea635.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2f1d61dc7b.jpg

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Also, one other thing on the Digital Instrument Display (DIS, I think is the name) behind the steering wheel, it shows that my drivers door is open and remains like that whilst the car is on. I haven't tested the fuses yet as I've been unable to find my multi meter, which I've stored away.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Could be that either the wiring from door sills side or the actual driver door window module itself could be faulty. I'd check the wiring (don't know how much there's access to do that) or get a window module from used part sellers (or maybe temp swap from other side by just plugging in it and reading faults)

I took a video of the loom before putting it into the door. I'll post a couple of screenshots from the video. Probably what you can see in these screenshots is probably a bit more than if I unconnect the connector that attaches to the car body.
Yeah, I could try swapping the window module from the other side, but I will likely need to wait until the weekend and then find a free space to do the work.
Is there a way to test the window module with the VCDS with the door card off? Just thinking when my door card was off and I couldn't press the door switches (windows, mirror switches).
I still have the old wiring loom, I was wondering if it might be worth trying to repair that wiring loom? It had 3-4 broken cables. Anyway, that may be for another day [emoji38] I'm just thinking of repairing it, threading it through, and it falling apart halfway through [emoji20] [emoji38] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2ee1b6bc3b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8e29445c30.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ff8cde6f16.jpg

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I picked up a cheap multimeter as it was the only one they had left in Halfords. I wanted to check the fuses by the steering wheel doing a continuity test, unfortunately it doesn't have the "beep" function on a complete fuse. I was wondering, does it matter what side you put the positive/negative probes ?
On Continuity test I know 1 means there is no circuit / likely fuse is blown. I went through all the fuses by the door, a couple came up with 0.00 and I was wondering if that meant anything, a few I swapped the probes around and then got another reading. I'm new to this, but I think any reading other than 0 is fine?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Do a voltage check across the pins for the red/green and brown wires, should be permanent 12v.

Cheers, I'll give that a try tomorrow. A question, might seem silly but where do I put the negative(black) connector from the multi meter? The positive (red one) I assume makes contact with the wire as it goes into the plug/connector. Think I read the negative is usually grounded, where would I ground it too?

Red lead to the red/green and black lead to the brown or any good earth

Hi Crasher, there isn't any space to check whilst it is plugged into the door connector as the space is too tight. Not sure if there's some sort of adapter to get into tight spots.
In the meantime I bought a replacement window motor hoping that, that might resolve the issues that I'm having. I've replaced the window motor today and the issues are still the same. Are there any trouble shooting steps you would suggest or to check with the wiring loom.
Maybe I could check the socket that the loom plugs into? If so, how would I go about that.
I messaged the ebay seller to ask if they tested the loom beforehand, this was their response
"Yes this was definitely working when we removed it off the car hence we listed it for sale. And we removed this with great care as I know how fragile these are.
90% of these we remove are damaged hence it was on eBay for less than 3 hours and it sold. So it was definitely working when we removed it."

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I use needle probes that make a tiny hole in the insulation but watch your fingers

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I haven't done much since the last post. I was going to remove the loom but then thought I haven't done a VCDS scan on the car since installing the new loom. Anyone know where I could get needle probes for a multimeter on the high street?
Are there any companies or people who repair the wiring looms? as my old one is out of the car and has 4 broken wires if I recall correctly. Are there certain repair wires needed? I wouldn't mind paying someone to sort out the wires.
Another note, previously, before this issue I was getting an error with the door lock module for the drivers door, where the drivers door wouldn't lock with the central locking, but that I could lock with the key. Anyhow, here's a scan I took today. I remove certain parts as I'm not sure if the whole data is safe to share vin / vcid?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I'm back, and still have the same problem :( lol
As the weather has started to get better I decided to attempt to repair my old "door wiring loom". I ordered previously a repair kit from eBay, that had the main connector (the wiring harness end that plugs into the car) and wires with crimp terminals to plug into the main connector. The kit came with "butt connectors" that could be heated up and had glue inside.
I replaced the wiring harness, put everything back together and.... I got the same result! Nothing working from the driver door switch. Quite disheartening as it took a while to do.
I never did end up getting the needle nose probes suggested to test the green/red and the brown cables in the harness. So guess I should order a pair, also I may look out for a multimeter that "beeps" lol if you guys have any recommendations for one, I'm open to suggestions.
The wiring loom I took out, that I bought from eBay to replace my original one doesn't appear to have any damaged cables, for as far as I can pull the rubber grommet/cover down whilst out of the door.
Previously I replaced the driver door module with a second hand unit. I also checked the fuses by the drivers door which seemed okay from memory.
What are other likely things that it could be? I think I'm going to check the fuses again, get the needle probes to check the power of the red/yellow and brown cables. I was thinking it could possibly be the plug in the car that the main wiring loom connector goes into or possibly the actual door switch (that controls the windows/mirrors) Any of these I can rule out based on the information provided?
Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Are the codes still the same?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I'm not too sure, think I'll need to dig out my laptop and VCDS to give the car a scan.

Here's a new scan, taken today of what looks like the issue parts. I've also ordered a pair of needle probes from Amazon that are due to arrive later today. I didn't clear the codes, so I'll do that and scan again.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Checked all the fuses by the steering wheel and under the bonnet. They all had readings, so, it doesn't look like one of the fuses. I see the door control module mentioned a few times in the scan. Is there any way to test the windows, mirrors with the door card off? I read some people got lucky unconnecting / reconnecting the connector.
The door control module I have in the door at the moment I got second hand from a part place. I still have the old one, not sure if I replaced it before or after I got the second hand wiring loom.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I swapped the door control module back over with the old one today. Looks like it's still the same. Here's a scan after clearing the codes. The instrument one has been there for before this issue but I removed as probably unrelated to the issue.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Here's a picture of my wiring loom repair before I added electrical tape to it. Also, im just wondering what the connector in the third picture is for? As that one doesn't come out with the wiring loom.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fe4cb8ec61.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8febca7faa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...95eed12f56.jpg

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
I think I found the problem, the wiring loom connector wasn't pushed all the way in. But I noticed that it wasn't clipping in to place. I used the old wiring loom connector that I cut from my old one during the repair, that wouldn't "click" into place either.
When I pushed the connections together and put the door card back on, closed the door. The windows and mirrors worked from the drivers side switch. I moved my car, when I next tried again, it wasn't working, probably the connector in the door loom has come out of the socket again. Looking at the socket, it looks like some of the bottom part of the socket might be broken, it's hard to see. My gues to what caused it could be that I didn't get the connector in properly behind the rubber grommet and maybe the force of the door closing on it chipped the bottom part? as the socket was initially secure when I first started all this and I didn't notice anything break during the other times I've been attempting this fix.
So I guess now I need to secure this socket some how. Anybody have any suggestions for semi temp solutions? or will I need a new socket?

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
If it is the one in the picture then I would change it, the part number is on it. You will need the specific terminal tool, I get the plug number to be 1K0 972 928 which costs £12.42 but you must use the correct primary locking tool VAS 1978/35-23, for the secondary one a thin blade screwdriver will suffice. Damage the pins and you are in a world of hurt. This doesn't seem to be available in the universal sets

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
Cheers, I've attached a few pictures of the connector. Not much space, so the pictures are quite close up, but I think the bottom part looks broken.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
The A pillar connector, nasty! That is a lot of delicate work, contact housing 8E0 972 701 you must use the correct tools 1978/18 and 35-24

Is there any reason other than it being broken that it might not "click" back in? Could it have been pushed back into the car body, or perhaps I haven't pushed it back hard enough. I haven't messed with the pink tab at the top that I recall.

Re: Audi A3 8P Drivers window not winding down and central locking issues.
They can be a real PITA due to the tight space.
